It grows stronger as you make your way down the brick walkway, bordered on both sides by lush green plants, that leads to the door. And you know it for a fact when you step over the threshold. From the rickety cigarette machine in the foyer to the pencil-drawn portraits of former Carolina basketball greats, Pug's exudes the air of uniqueness that has set it apart from the rest of Five Points for the past 10 years. General manager Nate Anderson takes an obvious pride in the bar. After getting up to confirm that it is indeed Sterling Sharpe's Green Bay Packer jersey hanging on the wall, as well as Todd Ellis' and Joe Morrison's, Anderson sits down to explain what makes Pug's different "It's the atmosphere," Anderson said, explaining that Pug's is actually two clubs in one. Anderson describes the downstairs as "laid-back" and "casual." Its features include cozy booths and an authentic popcorn machine, providing a w~~m environment for intimate conversations over a couple of drinks. Boating on serene waters above the eyes is a house boat, encircled in a halo of lightening. This is frightening. This is mesmerizing. This is the marquis poster for Cape Fear. Riding high on the success of last year's Oscar-winning Goodfellas, master director Martin Scorsese barrels into the remake of the 1962 Robert Mitchum ? Gregory Peck classic Cape Fear. While the title and basic plot of the '91 version are the same as the original, Scorsese ana scnpier Wesley Strick add another dimension of guilt, sufferance and redemption. Having spent 14 years in a Georgia prison for sexual assault, Max Cady is paroled. He wants his former defense attorney, Sam tiowaen, 10 sutler as ne nas suffered because Sam withheld evidence in Cady's trial that would have kept him out of prison. "Most people come in here to have a good time," Anderson said. The cheapest good time to be had is Happy Hour, from 4 to 7 p.m., when all liquor is a dollar off. Another main attraction is Pug himself, the owner. According to Anderson, "the infamous Pug Wallace" can be found at the bar most days and evenings, sometimes whipping up specialities in the kitchen. Anderson contends there is "always something going on" at what he calls the "long-lasting tradition at Five Points."
