Rivalry *' ' South Carolina-Clemson contest clouds advantages of both schools USC and Clem son will face each other in a football game for the umpteenth time Saturday. The rivalry between the two schools is one of the most intense in college athletics. Unfortunately, this constant competition has the side effect of giving the boosters for both sides a slanted view of the other's school. ; For example, many USC students dismiss Clemson University as a "cow college" or "Moo U." While it is true Clemson started as an agricultural and military school, it is much more than that today. Clemson has nationally respected programs in architecture, accoutring and the sciences. It is hardly the redneck enclave we at USC would like to make it. Similarly, Gemson students portray USC as being in a shoddy neighborhood surrounded by dangerous criminal elements. Some Gemson students are actually surprised when they see The Horseshoe for the first time; presumably they were expecting a ghetto. The USGGemson rivalry (with its jokes, posters and heated football games) is fun and makes life more interesting in both of South Carolina's biggest universities, BUT Gemson and USC are in the same state, with students from the exact same towns. Let's not let a sports rivalry blind ourselves to reality. Updated Map o? Yugoslavia : V# Asst. News Editor Asst. News Editor Amy Barcomb Rich Taylor asm. Carolina Life Editor Asst. Magic acquired HIV through habitual carelessness and irresponsibility which are the same character flaws he currently condemns.
