Economy United States still in recession; old solutions just not working Batten down the hatches; the American economy is sinking fast. The Dow Jones dropped 75.58 points by 2 p.m. Tuesday. The U.S. trade deficit for September was up to $6.79 billion. To quote a vice president for Prudential Securities, "the economy right now is weak and investors don't know when it will turn up again." The president is pushing the Big Lie. He says the economy is recovering when the above statistics prove it is not. The U.S. is losing ground to the Europeans and the Japanese. The stock market has lost confidence in Bush's rosy forecasts. Unless he really starts getting the economy started, he may be looking for a iob in earlv 1993. * J Cutting the prime rate won't work anymore. This technique has proven to be an artificial short-term measure, not a real solution to substantial economic problems. Bush must give bigger tax breaks to corporations that develop their plant and equipment. We cannot hope to compete with foreign companies if we don't improve our factories and retrain our workers. Tax relief for the individual is also necessary. This will mean cutting back government spending. Not exactly Keynesian economics (which emphasizes government spending during recessionary times), but big government obviously hasn't been helping lately anyway. Tax breaks to the middle class would free up more money for consumer spending and would help alleviate our present doldrums. The measures called for above are classic parts of the Republican platform. Ironically, Bush is not practicing what he preaches, just like Reagan before him. Mr. President, cut taxes, cut government, get America going again. Two days after USC signs the best high school basketball player in the state of Kentucky, police said he went out and stabbed his ex-girlfriend ? the mother of two of his childen. Police said Carlos Turner stabbed his girlfriend Nicole Shriver seven times in the upper torso, but in doing this bloody action, he also took a knife to the Athletic Department. Questions are being thrown around campus and answers are due. This is the first major conflict, besides sitting 7-foot center Jeff Roulston on the bench in favor of 6-foot-8-inch forward Chris Leso during a recent exhibition game, that new head basketball coach Steve Newton has had to face. However, this problem won't go away as easy as George Felton's DUI charge. Can Newton really say he didn't know about the personality of Turner? If so, then Newton did a shoddy job of recruiting an addition to the Gamecock squad. | Even Turner's former high school basketball j coach Stan Hardin, an assistant for Newton, j said he was not aware of the problems. Magic best th HIV-positive. Need I say more. I am pretty willing to bet that the first thing that comes to everyone's mind is Magic Johnson. Even though it's been about a week since Magic told America the news, his contraction of the virus is still on everyone's mind. It's a sad thing that such a wonderful man could have to suffer what Magic Johnson is doubtless to face. It's the worst thing ever to happen to Magic. It may be the best thing ever to happen to victims of AIDS. For the first time, someone who has the hearts of America on his side is staring down the barrel of the AIDS death sentence. It seems that the only time we hear about support for AIDS victims is at gay-pride rallies and through the efforts of artsy, liberal type musicians. Unfortunately, the public always seems to write those people off as "the kind of people who get AIDS." I was put through a tough interview process to get a scholarship and I'm sure there was some sort of background check. Why was there such a lack of checking for Mr. Turner? Is it because he can dunk a basketball and get those athletic boosters to donate more money to USC? Most likely. Mr. Newton, we need answers and we need them now. There can be no explanation for this but laziness, which should not be tolerated. We need to be more careful and if that means spending another 56 days looking for a new basketball coach, so be it to AIDS fight of us are any more immune than the untouchable Magic. He's now another kind of unwitting hero. He will be remembered for generations for his courage in the face of the ultimate adversity, not a score board or Larry Bird, but an incurable disease.
