Audietn 'De La! By TODD SCHOLL Staff Writer About a month ago I heard De La Soul would be appearing at the 13-13 Club in Charlotte on Nov. 3. I didn't want to miss out on what could potentially be an excellent show. So, last Sunday I headed to Charlotte in hopes that De La Soul would kick much booty. When my friends and I arrived at the 13-13 Club, we immediately positioned ourselves right in front of the center of the stage. We waited there for about an hour listening to Public Enemy, Deee-Lite, Third Bass and Pop Will Eat Itself. We stood there lamenting about how awful it was that Tribe Called Quest was preparing to take the stage about two hours away in Chapel Hill. Two high Quality rap groups were performing on the same night in North Carolina and we were going to have to miss cme of them. The opening act, Organized Rhyme, took the stage and put on a decent show. Their beats and rhyming styles were entertaining, but their stage presence made their performance less credible. The D.J. was not showcased well enough. It was obvious he could have ripped it up, but he only displayed some of his skills towards the end of the show. I would have rather seen Milli Vanilli lip-sync excerpts from the Clarence Thomas hearings to the beat of "Ice Ice Baby" for a couple of hours. These three guys took the stage for about 40 minutes and made fools of themselves. A guy behind me yelled, "You better keep your day jobs!" They would have hit the road early that night With the crowd hungry for some real talent De La Soul stormed onto stage. P.A. Mase, the D.J., came out first tugging a teddy bear with him. Tragoy and Posdnuos followed, and the three of them turned the place out Mase showed off his skills, like the propmaster he is, by mixing, scratching and occasionally ripping the mic. He even mixed in the instrumental to The Geto Boy's "My Mind's Playing Tricks on Me" and Cypress Hill's "How I Could Just in the Campus Reci US!! 777-5261 (or "S aste of music Kill a Man". Throughout the show I had to keep moving my hands because Trugoy almost stepped on them several times. Trugoy and Posd nuos worked the crowd and delivered rhyme after rhyme flawlessly. Their three dancers put on an excellent show. With little stage to work with, they managed to move quite well complimenting the group's stage show. De La Soul performed songs from both of their critically acclaimed albums including "Eye Know," "Plug Tunin'," "Buddy," "Oodles of O's," "Pease Porridge" and many more. Each song was performed with energy and precision. Even their road crew was having a good time. The highlight, for me, had to be joining De La Soul on stage for their finale "Me Myself and I." De La Soul were well worth the $10.50 and the long drive. They were even worth having to sit through Demigodz. They don't have an attitude, and they don't put themselves above the crowd. They seemed happy to give out autographs, and they made it seem like doing the show was fun for them.
