Animated drei USC gra By LEE CLONTZ Staff Writer Everyone who pursues a major in media arts hopes to become successful, but few even dream of attaining the level of success reached by 1980 USC graduate Dan Kneece. For the quality of his cinematography, he received the 1991 College of Applied Professional Sciences Alumni Award Friday Night. His illustrious credits include Dying Young, Days of Thunder, Tales from the Crypt, Star Trek VI and Freddy's Dead: the Final Nightmare. His job consists primarily of specialty shots involving the Steadicam, a device that allows a camera operator to hand hold a camera while maintaining a steady image. I His success began while still in college, when he became the first I person to graduate from USC with an animated thesis film. The film, " Sarah, was greeted with acclaim. "It was made with wax on glass Be plates ... it was really, really bi- a zarre. It got a regional nomination be for a student Academy Award, and in it opened the Los Angeles Anima- sh tion Festival," Kneece said. dc Kneece, who started off in the College of Pharmacy, eventually jj) realized film was his true calling. Despite the frustrations, Kneece contends that his profession is worth great amounts of trouble. TURBITT Staff Writer At the summons of your friends who have just decided they are too broke to go out, you are sent out to rent a movie. They shove $3 into your hand, content in their certitude that you have the rare ability to find some movie to keep them entertained. You rush to your favorite video store just before closing time and make a beeline to the new movie section. You are then faced with the greatest personal rejection since your girlfriend dropped you for your so-called best friend in high school ? why all the shiny, colorized, modern flicks that have come out on video this week are rented out. Or, you might find that some of the latest movies are in, but they leave you daunted as you ask yourself, "Is there really a need for Predator //? I mean, after all, Arnold wiped it out in the original by putting all that mud on his body and blasting it all the way back to Clemson with machine eun fire. Even the Termi nator himself isn't in this!" What is one to do? The simple solution is to try any one of a number of movie classics that your friends probably haven't seen. Here's a suggested chronologue of movies worth devoting an evening's leisure to. Rebecca ? Just about Alfred Hitchcock's finest two hours and 10 minutes. Laurence Olivier stars as Maxim de Winter, an upper class noble consumed by the death of his apparently profound and domineering wife. Joan Fontaine stars as Olivier's second wife who is haunted, overpowered and kept in the shadow of Rebecca. A General of extraordinary ability and one of the most fascinating leaders in U.S. history. George C. Scott makes you believe that he himself literally has become the commander of the vaunted third army during WWII. Patton was a man who believed in reincarnation and based his attacks on the strategies of the ancient Greeks and Romans. "Old Blood and Guts" was considered the military man the Germans feared most Karl Maiden also stars in 1969's Academy Award Winner for Best Picture. On the Waterfront ? Marlon Brando's breakthrough performance. A young "punk" (Brando) defies the orders of a waierironi doss who eumiuxs me labor supply on the local docks. One of film histories most famous lines comes from this movie, "Charlie, oh. Charlie, you don't understand. I could have had class. I could have been a contender." Karl Maiden and Rod Steiger co-starred and Leonard Bernstein composed the music to the movie honored as Best Picture in 1954. Bridge on the River Kwai ? Famed director Sir David Lean's most accessible film, also his best. Combines and explores human psychological will and prison drama in a unique war film. Captured British soldiers in WWII are forced to build a bridge in Burma, which becomes a test of wills between a British commanding officer and their Japanese captors. Shocking ending.
