Studen By CHAD BRAY Staff Writer I Two residents of the Womens' Quad were allegedly raped by a I Columbia man in their rooms last f week. According to USC Police, one McClintock resident was apparently sexually assaulted Sept. 23 at 12:30 p.m. Another McClintock I resident was allegedly raped Sept.29 at 1:47 a.m. The latter assault was reported to USC Police at 4:20 a.m. that day. Police responded and the victim was transported to Richland Memorial Hospital for follow-up and evidence-gathering procedures. The Sept. 23 assault was reported immediately after the Sept.29 incident. Both 18-year-old females were allegedly raped by the same * 18-year-old non-student male. Law Enforcement officials said ^Vi% no charges have been filed yet. If charged, the subject would be arrested for third degree criminal ,$ sexual assault. Jerry Crotty, student discipline and university withdrawals direc,.f tor, said residents are less likely to report a sexual assault after a violation of the visitation policy or when the student has been drinking underage. "Sometimes those things chill their willingness to report things jjjgt for fear they will get in trouble," Crotty said. Police reports indicate neither resident was using alcohol nor violating the visitation policy at the time of the alleged rapes. Third degree sexual assault occurs when force is used or the victim is mentally defective, incapacitated or physically helpless. The maximum penalty for the felony is ? 10 years imprisonment. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, one out of every four women will be molested in their lifetime. Most victims are 15-29 years old and 60 percent of all victims know their assailants. "Most often when rape occurs it is with someone they know anyway," said Dennis Pruitt, director of , Student Affairs. "In date rape and acquaintance rape, people know each other very well; they've been friends for a long time and sometimes they've been involved in social relationships." "They can file criminal charges against the person, they can seek civil redress, they can file student disciplinary charges and... there can be conditions on which they are allowed to continue in school." Dennis Pruitt Student Affairs Vice President The Association of American Colleges suggests women should follow these simple steps to avoid date rape: Examine your feelings about sex. tt Set sensual limits. Decide early if you would like to have sex. Do not give mixed messages; be clear. Be alert to other unconscious messages you may be giving. * Be forceful and firm. Be independent and aware of your dates. Do not give into demands you don't agree with to avoid a scene or unpleasantness. Be aware of specific situations in which you do not feel relaxed and in charge. If things start to get out of hand, be loud in pro iai id dcai ui J by George Reeves in an interim professor, capacity. Be aware, alcohol and drugs are often related to acquaintance rape. Avoid falling for such lines as "You would if you loved me." If you are unsure of a new acquaintance, go on a group or double date. Have your own transportation, if possible, or taxi fare. Avoid secluded places where you are in a vulnerable position. Examine your attitudes about money and power. Think about the pros and cons of dating older men. Socialize with people who share your values. When a student is raped, Pruitt said, the victim has various options. Pruitt and Jerry CroUy, director of student discipline, recommend those who are raped should contact the authorities and receive medical attention. "They should go through the rape protocol, collect all the necessary evidence, so at whatever point they decide they would like to press charges that information is available to the investigators and the police," Pruitt said. Whenever the university is involved in a rape case, a volunteer from the Rape Crisis Center is called to help the victim through the turmoil of a rape, Pruitt said. "The Rape Crisis Center may be seen as a more neutral party (than the university) to a victim," Crotty said. Pruitt also stressed a rape is a morally inappropriate act "Individuals should realize that it is so inappropriate," Pruitt said, "the consequences are severe."
