Palms met with officials from the Horry Coi Higher Education Commission and Coastal Educai Foundation Monday and said separation was not answer to Coastal's problems. Palms also met with members of the Execut Committee of the Board of Trustees Tuesday afi noon via telephone conference. He expressed the sa concerns and said Coastal's plans were "v< unrealistic." "I feel their conclusions are very premature. Thi: not the best of times financially to ask to become independent school," Palms said. Palms said the plan for "secession," labeled Myrtle Beach newspapers, went through the wrc channels. "If they want to leave the system, tl should have went through the Board of Trustees, the commission," he said. Real-life predatory plants known for strangling some crops have appeared on two college campuses. The Orobanche minor and the Cuscuta japonica ? scientific names for the eerie parasitic weeds that choke their prey ? are on a federal hit list The Department-of Agriculture has a list of 93 foreign plants that are invading natural ecosystems and threatening crops like tobacco, soybean, corn and clover. The plants have been found in small contained areas at Erskine College in Due West and at Clemson University. "Both of them are bad weeds," said Randy Westbrooks of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Parasitic plants do not grow by themselves; they grow on the roots or stems of other plants, often causing them harm. The Orobanche is known as the strangler, BP J In the World... Researchers believe the Orobanche at Erskine and the Cuscuta at Clemson have not been found anywhere else in the United States. The Cuscuta japonica, from China and Ja pan, attacks mostly soybeans. The predatory plant attacks the stems of other plants. It has large green stems with purple dots. 'That's the one that looks like something from a horror movie," said Westbrooks, who works in the USDA's animal and plant health inspection service. "It's a vine that looks like it's strangling it's victim. They are like suckers that are attached to the host," he said. "Right now, it's attacking kudzu. A weed attacking a weed is very bizarre.
