USC President John Palms is discouraging Coa
Carolina College from leaving the USC system a

Palms met with officials from the Horry Coi
Higher Education Commission and Coastal Educai
Foundation Monday and said separation was not
answer to Coastal's problems.
Palms also met with members of the Execut
Committee of the Board of Trustees Tuesday afi
noon via telephone conference. He expressed the sa
concerns and said Coastal's plans were "v<
unrealistic."
"I feel their conclusions are very premature. Thi:
not the best of times financially to ask to become
independent school," Palms said.
Palms said the plan for "secession," labeled
Myrtle Beach newspapers, went through the wrc
channels. "If they want to leave the system, tl
should have went through the Board of Trustees,
the commission," he said.
The Horry County Higher Educational Commiss
and Coastal Education Fooundation voted unani
ously this past Tuesday night to begin the process
leaving the USC system.
Since the proposal, members of the two bodies h;
met with members of the faculty to drum up supp
for the separation.
The Commission also sited that the college 1

they grow on the roots or stems of other
plants, often causing them harm.

Researchers believe the Orobanche at Erskine
and the Cuscuta at Clemson have not
been found anywhere else in the United States.
The Cuscuta japonica, from China and Ja

plant attacks the stems of other plants. It has
large green stems with purple dots.
