June 16 at < NFL realignme explored at gre By DAVID BOWDEN Editor in chief The National Football League has finally decided to add two expansion teams, to begin play in 1994. The NFL will realign its six divisions at the same time. Smart money says that Charlotte and St Louis will get the two new teams, which is great for Carolina football fans (although Memphis or Birmingham are more deserving of teams than St. Louis, which couldn't even keep the Cardinals). If Paul Tagliabue is reading this, the following are my suggestions for how the realignment of the teams should go. I tried not to break up good rivalries or move teams from one conference to the other. On the other hand, I wanted to encourage new geographic rivalries, so there are some major chnages. AFC West: Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, L.A. Raiders, San Diego Chargers, Seattle Seahawks. In other words, no changes. AFC Central: Browns, Bengals, Oilers, Steelers, with the addition of the Indianapolis Colts from the AFC East. AFC East: Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets, and the new Car olina Creampuffs. NFC West: 49ers and Rams will stay, with the addition of the Phoenix Cardinals from the NFC East, Do somett Feel some! NFC Central: Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowhovs from the NFC East, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, and the New Orleans Saints from the NFC West NFC East: Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Washington Redskins. Before NFL fans get mad at me moving Dallas out of the same division as the Redskins, Eagles and Giants, let me make one more change: no inter-conference play < until the Super Bowl. I like the \ way baseball does that. I think it would work well in the far superior NFL. I With fifteen teams in each conference, any one team can easily ? play a 16-game schedule without i playing teams from the other con- ] ference. Simple as the 49ers' of- j fense, right? j One last semi-serious change ] would be to name the six divisions ( after NFL greats, similar to the ( way pro hockey does. My sug- j gested names for such an honor j would be Vince Lombardi, Jim Brown, Joe Greene, Dick Butkus, A1 Davis and Joe Montana (when he retires). The main reason for this being the fact that my team, the team ['ve stuck with for some reason ihrough all the crap and last-place finishes, is actually playing good baseball ? the Atlanta Braves.
