NFL realignme
explored at gre
By DAVID BOWDEN
Editor in chief
The National Football League
has finally decided to add two expansion
teams, to begin play in
1994. The NFL will realign its six
divisions at the same time. Smart
money says that Charlotte and St
Louis will get the two new teams,
which is great for Carolina football
fans (although Memphis or Birmingham
are more deserving of
teams than St. Louis, which
couldn't even keep the Cardinals).
If Paul Tagliabue is reading this,
the following are my suggestions
for how the realignment of the
teams should go. I tried not to
break up good rivalries or move
teams from one conference to the
other. On the other hand, I wanted
to encourage new geographic rivalries,
so there are some major
chnages.
AFC West: Denver Broncos,
Kansas City Chiefs, L.A. Raiders,
San Diego Chargers, Seattle Seahawks.
In other words, no changes.
AFC Central: Browns, Bengals,
Oilers, Steelers, with the addition
of the Indianapolis Colts from the
AFC East.
AFC East: Buffalo Bills, Miami
Dolphins, New England Patriots,
New York Jets, and the new Car
olina Creampuffs.
NFC West: 49ers and Rams will
stay, with the addition of the Phoenix
Cardinals from the NFC East,

Before NFL fans get mad at me
moving Dallas out of the same division

Giants, let me make one more
change: no inter-conference play <
until the Super Bowl. I like the \
way baseball does that. I think it
would work well in the far superior
NFL. I

...Let's get things started with an
all-out injustice. No, I am NOT referring
to George Felton's dismissal.
I am alluding to the NCAA's
snubbing of the Lady Gamecock
Softball team when bids were extended
to the national tourney in
May. Coach Joyce Compton's
squad finished with a 51-13 record,
but were passed over for the
second consecutive season. Win
ning at an 80% clip is pretty darn
impressive, but obviously not impressive
enough for the selection
committee. Congratulations to
Coach Compton and her team for a
GREAT year!

t)ut for the first time in years, I am
not already sick and tired of baseball.
The main reason for this being
the fact that my team, the team
['ve stuck with for some reason
ihrough all the crap and last-place
finishes, is actually playing good
baseball ? the Atlanta Braves.
You gotta love it. I don't expect
them to be there in October, but if
they just play .500 ball, I will be
more than satisified. Alright, I told
Rich I wouldn't harp on the
Braves the whole time. But, one
last thing, if they keep this up, new

the inaugural World Bowl
will be played at London's Wembley
Stadium on this coming Sunday.
It will pit the WLAF's best,
the London Monarchs and Barcelona
Dragons, in its own LAFfable
version of the Super Bowl. O.K.,
David Bowden, the league isn't all
that bad. Hrmmph.
...What happened to Bjorn
Borg's comeback?
...The Detroit Pistons certainly
bared their collective arses while
being swept by the Chicago Bulls
in the Eastern Conference finals.
After five years of greatness, the
Pistons went out in the same manner
that they came in ? with a
total lack of class. To be as talented
a franchise as they undeniably
are, it is sickening that they
could not muster any trace of integrity
or humility when their reign
came to an end. Bill Laimbeer,
Isiah Thomas and Dennis Rodman
are early tri-favorites for Sports
Jerk-of-the-Year.
...Clemson's early exit from the

about another player fast-balling a
guy in the stands. But who's
wrong here? You can argue that
since these guys like Albert Belle
and Jose Canseco are making $2
million a year, they should have to
put up with whatever happens out
there. Not only that, but the
working?man fan out there pays
his ten bucks to see a game, so he
should be allowed to say whatever
he wants to the rich prima-donna
cry baby out there.

Right? Wrong. Some players
are saying that fans are stepping
over the lines between riding a
player and down right legal harassment.
No matter what happens, I
don't see any way a player can be
allowed to turn around a hit a fan
in the stands with a ball. Get the
bum kicked out of the game, smile
at him, give him the finger, moon
him, but don't put yourself in the
position of having to deal with the
legal entaglements during the

Now some people may find this
impossible to believe, but the rationale
of it is that when a pitcher
has a no-hitter going, it's not

it will get jinxed. So now you the
