Some say this is a bad thing, that modern cinema rots the minds of America's youth with blood and gore. This point of view doesn't give movie-goers much respect. This is not to say that gory effects aren't abused. In the past, I have criticized modern horror movies for relying on graphic specialeffects to carry an otherwise thin plot A recent example of this sort of film is Hardware, which has an interesting scene of a man cut in half by large steel doors. The plot isn't nearly that interesting; it's more or less a rip-off of The Terminator. The point is that graphic violence is a tool used to evoke a response in the audience. It can be overdone, or in the hands of a skillful director, can be used for crrpat pffect such as in the famous fc>* ~? ' ? ? ? scene in Alien, where an alien creature explodes out of a man's stomach. Graphic effects can even be funny. One thing graphic violence does not do is turn the viewer into a homicidal maniac or make real violence less tragic. People of today are not less grieved by a plane crash, for example, than earlier generations, even though the contemporary audience has been subjected to more intense and realistic violence than ever before. The worst that can be said of today's movie audience is that they are bored and unimpressed with classic thrillers like Psycho and Rear Window because there isn't enough action. Wes Craven, the director and creator of Nightmare on Elm Street and other horror classics, said that it is harder and harder to find ways to shock an audience. I agree. I can't conceive of anything a Hollywood director could put in a movie that would gross out the American public, for better or worse. After you've seen Hellraiser, you've seen it all. A 10 year old today wouldn't flinch at a decapitation in one of tlie Friday the 13th films but would probably still cry when Bambi died. Besides, people who dislike extreme violence don't have to watch it.
