more violent over the years. Some
say this is a bad thing, that modern
cinema rots the minds of
America's youth with blood and
gore. This point of view doesn't
give movie-goers much respect.
This is not to say that gory effects
aren't abused. In the past, I
have criticized modern horror movies
for relying on graphic specialeffects
to carry an otherwise thin
plot A recent example of this sort
of film is Hardware, which has an
interesting scene of a man cut in
half by large steel doors. The plot
isn't nearly that interesting; it's
more or less a rip-off of The
Terminator.
The point is that graphic violence
is a tool used to evoke a response
in the audience. It can be
overdone, or in the hands of a
skillful director, can be used for
crrpat pffect such as in the famous

scene in Alien, where an alien creature
explodes out of a man's
stomach.
Graphic effects can even be
funny. In The Re-animator, a mad
scientist walks around with his

One thing graphic violence does
not do is turn the viewer into a
homicidal maniac or make real violence
less tragic. People of today
are not less grieved by a plane
crash, for example, than earlier
generations, even though the contemporary
audience has been subjected
to more intense and realistic
violence than ever before.
The worst that can be said of today's
movie audience is that they
are bored and unimpressed with
classic thrillers like Psycho and
Rear Window because there isn't
enough action.
Wes Craven, the director and
creator of Nightmare on Elm Street
and other horror classics, said that
it is harder and harder to find ways
to shock an audience.
I agree. I can't conceive of anything
a Hollywood director could
put in a movie that would gross
out the American public, for better
or worse. After you've seen Hellraiser,
you've seen it all.
A 10 year old today wouldn't
flinch at a decapitation in one of
tlie Friday the 13th films but
would probably still cry when
Bambi died.
Besides, people who dislike extreme
violence don't have to watch
it. Those would-be censors should
realize that graphic violence is going
to be with us as long as there
are young teenagers with money in

know what feels best to your partner
unless you communicate.
Talking about sex can certainly
help you avoid the negative consequences
of sex, but talking can
also help both partners get more
pleasure from the experience.
Don't assume everyone is the
same.
I live in a dorm on campus, and
I take a shower every morning.
However, by the end of the day I
feel uncomfortable and dirty because
my pubic area is sweaty.
This problem is especially frustrating
during my period.
I've noticed some irritation
and itchiness at times, and I'm
worried that I'm getting some
awful fungus or disease. The bottom
line is that I know I
wouldn't have this problem if I
could take a bath or just sit in a
tub once a day. What can I do?

the Student Health Center. It
seems that taking a bath might
make a person feel cleaner but
would not necessarily cut down on
the amount of perspiration and irritation
in the genital area.
Here are some other suggestions
that may help when moisture is a
problem:
Wear all cotton underwear. Use
a blow dryer to help dry off completely
after a shower, and dust the
genital area with Caldesone-brand
powder (sold over the counter),
which helps reduce moisture and
has an antifungal ingredient.
Also, white, unscented Dovebrand
soap is recommended, in
case there is an allergy to the current
brand of soap being used. If
there is no vaginal odor or heavy
discharge, it is probably not a vaginal
infection. However, if symptoms
persist or become more annoying,
it couldn't hurt to consult
a medical practitioner.
