Gamecocok f; embarrassmt I remember the last time I was at Georgia Tech very well (Cue smoke and forboding music). It was the first time I had ever sat in the press box anywhere. I trembled as I flashed my press pass to the security guard and headed for the elevator at Grant Field in Atlanta. USC was on a roll that season. The mighty Gamecocks were 6-0, coming ott ot a close can at Virginia Tech (26-24) and an earlier defeat of Georgia in front of a packed Williams-Brice Stadium and a TBS television audience USC was also ranked in the Associated Press top 20. I was nervous but arrogant. "These boys don't have a chance," I thought as the elevatoi arrived on press level. I steppec out, and like a lost puppy, startec snooping around for my seat. I fi nally had to break down and as! for help. A helpful press box crew mem ber ushered me to my seat with smirk. I'm sure he was thinking "Gamecocks ... geesh!" I couldn't speak. I was almost a the 50-yard line and had, not onlj a great view of the field, but th< nice Atlanta skyline off to m> right. Enough narrative, now it wa: time for the slaughter. There was a great USC crow< and, before the game, it almos sounded like I was at Williams Brice (end smoke and music). I came out of dreamland some time that afternoon. 34-0. Tech ha< eaten us up and spit out the pieces So much for the ranking, the unde feated season (OK, so maybe Fn pushing it), but it was stil horrible. And to place the cherry of de spair on top of my depression sun dae, I had to sit beside the guy from the Tech student newspapei They were very nice, don't get m wrong, but I could just hear ther cheer every time Tech scored c made a good play. Every word 01 of their mouths was like anothe blow to the head. By the time the game ended was a wreck. My tie wasn' straight, my jacket all wrinkle and my dreams crushed like roach in the Towers. Think my nightmare is over? O no, kiddies. When I returned from Atlanta, expected comforting words fror my editor. Nope. He called me a jinx on the fool ball team. Jones, i. just a sophomore, can throw and is - dangerous on the run. Combine a that with the fact USC has often 1 been caught chasing a QB downfield. Georgia Tech coach Bobby Ross stressed South Carolina's speed as the Yellow Jackets began preparations Monday for their Saturday match with the Gamecocks. Georgia Tech is 2-0 and South Carolina 3-0 going into the 4 p.m. contest at Bobby Dodd Stadium, to be televised by ESPN. Analyzing the Gamecocks, Ross said, "This will be, defensively, the biggest forward wall that we've seen all season. In addition, they have great speed in the perimeter areas of their defense." The Gamecocks feature a oneback offense, Ross said. "The real key, however, is that they have great speed in their receivers." Ross described South Carolina quarterback Bobby Fuller as having "a very good sense of timing, a good, soft touch on the football and he knows what he's doing with the offense." Fuller will be facing a Tech defense that has allowed only 117.5 passing yards per game in its first two games, best in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
