At a press conference, L.A Law's Susan Dey and Corbir Bernsen joined Rape Treatmen Center Director Gail Abarbanel t( announce the national program which includes a new 20-minut* film about campus sexual assault. The film, "Campus Rape," i: sponsored by Dey and Bernsen an* has already been distributed by th< center to more than half the uni versities in the country. The cente encourages college administrator: to adopt the film as part of orienta tion programs for all incoming stu dents. The film was recently en dorsed by the National Interfrater nity Conference, which distribute* copies to its members. "The goal of the campaign an* the film is to reduce the epidemi* number of campus sexual as saults," Abarbanel said. "Recen studies indicated that each year one in every six college women i: a victim of rape or attempted rape and one in every 15 college mei admit to committing sexua assault" The film contains important in formation about rape and preven tion strategies. Additional cam paign materials include powerfu ads and posters for colleges t< adopt. Also included are proposal; for state legislation, which woul< require colleges to implement writ ten procedures for handling sexua assault cases and mandatory rap prevention programs for freshmen. "Students must understand tha rape is not sex," Dey said, wh< thinks the film is a valuable re source in educating students. The campaign gives college men an opt portunity to become part of the [ solution, rather than part of the ; problem." , Abarbanel said college students > are more vulnerable to rape than t any other age group. t "To compound the problem, studies have shown that more than 90 percent of campus rapes go unrel ported. To specifically address college \ administrators, the Rape Treatment Center mailed its booklet, "Sexual \ Assault on Campus: What Col: leges Can Do," to every college . president in the country. t The booklet urges adoption of a 10-point rape prevention program 5' model, which includes mandatory educational programs about rape, \ increased disciplinary hearings for \ offenders and comprehensive programs for assisting victims.
