USC graduat* Peac< By DENNIS SHEALY Staff Writer Two local artists who are USC alumni are expressing their art in less traditional means. They have traded in their canvas and paint brushes for 100-percent cotton and silkscreens. D /vUk T n n/\ nn/I t7 i\uuu i^aut anxa mivuvai vjuj , artists-turned-entrepreneurs, are joining the growing trend for Tshirts displaying more artistic designs. Lane and Gay, along with USC business graduate Son Ha, have entered into art T-shirt manufacturing. Through the process of silkscreening, Lane and Gay turn their art works into attractive and trendy T-shirts. Robb Lane's line of T-shirts, Ghost Dance, deals with southwestern motifs. The Ghost Dance was a sacred dance of the Native American Indians, which was believed to grant power in overcoming the white man. "There are two anniversaries coming up that won't be widely if A +4Y ceieoratea oy Americans, i.ane said. "The first is the 100th anniversary of Wounded Knee (Dec. 22). The other marks the 500th anniversary of Columbus * discovery and the decline of the Indian nation." Gay is developing several lines based on eastern influences, dance and nature. The Sho series, for example, is based upon Japanese calligraphy. "With Sho, I'm trying to convey to a western audience the beauty I see in Oriental writing by creating abstract images based upon different characters." Both artists have designed their T-shirts to be different from the majority of consumer choices. The T-shirt has become a staple of American day-to-day wear, and Lane and Gay's designs lend a luugii ui ail <iiin Glass iu uic guirent fashion. Both artists have many designs to choose from, and they are always designing new ones to keep the Columbians looking better than the next guy. Both artists' works are available only at Peacocks, located in the newly built Capitol Centre.
