Open Door, a health service located in the Russell House, has a three-week smoking-cessation program that is free to students, as well as drop-in counselling. Open Door Director Lisa Mohn said the six-session program is different than most smoking-cessation classes. "A lot of programs focus on behavior changes, and we take the opposite approach," Mohn said. "We teach the smoker to confront every urge and make a decision: 'Will I smoke or will I choose not to?' The benefit from this type of thinking is that you're more likely to stay off." The greatest temptations to smoke actually come later on, Mohn said. "Nicotine is a stimulus, and when you quit, you're no longer getting those little jolts of energy." The coughing is attributed to the lungs cleaning themselves out, and the other symptoms are signs of the body receiving more oxygen, she said. "After the first week, any urges the smoker feels are psychological," she said. People often worry about quitting smoking because of weight gain, but that's because people tend to use cigarettes to avoid eating, Mohn said. "Most of the urges smokers get come out of habit," she said. "If you always smoke after dinner, be n i XEN IT. M7 SAVE LIVES. ) DOES. ?
