600-mile h< drives bore By SCOTT PRUDEN Staff Writer Thanksgiving is over, in case you didn't notice everyone turning green at the thought of yet another turkey sandwich and Christmas decorations startine to so un all over the place. For some people, that's the sign that it's time to shift their minds into Christmas spirit mode, which usually entails being extra fast when trying to grab that parking space at the mall, or saying "excuse me" when they muscle to the front of the crowd trying to snatch a Nintendo for their little video hoodlum. I, being a different sort of fellow, have a different way of heralding the arrival of the holiday season. I hop in my car, switch it to automatic pilot ana arive ouu miles up to Delaware for the traditional Thanksgiving celebration. Yes, I'm from Delaware, second smallest state in the union, the first to ratify the Constitution and seat of the great, glorious, sprawling DuPont corporate empire. But it's not the goal of my journey that moves me to transcend the everyday world and start thinking about Christmas. It's the drive itself. It's quite simple. A 600-mile trek up 1-95 in an '85 Subaru is perhaps the greatest test of endurance ever created, especially if you're not making the journey on your own. I usually make it with my sister, who is a great companion because we're enough alike that we enjoy the same music and don't drive each other absolutely insane, but different enough to be able to keep conversations going. She also sleeps a whole lot. We usuallly do okay through South Carolina, North Carolina and a bit of Virginia, pretty much IT ? No radio stations, no scenery but sand and pine trees, and best of all, very little traffic. That all ends when we hit Richmond. Toll booths cause three lanes of 65 mph traffic to seize up and turn into a slowly crawling parking lot. Anxiety starts to buna because experienced interstate drivers know that it doesn't get any better from there. And worst of all, there's always some goofball from Quebec in a Winnebago who suddenly decides he doesn't want to be in the exactchange-only-lane. He wants to be in my lane. Sure I want to access my foreign-language swear word bank, but it's Christmas, so I control myself. It's a bad feeling, hating people because they want to get in front of you, because I usually let folks in with no qualms whatsoever. I always say the world would be a little better if everyone would let someone else in. It's just that over the holidays, everyone seems a little more eager _ to drive me off the road and see j me burst into a flaming ball of m vinyl and white painted aluminum. ^ From Richmond north is a driver's nightmare.
