Pflughaupt as a leader By DAVE KAY Staff Writer Among the seven returners from the 1988 USC Volleyball team, one young lady, in particular, stands out She is Stephanie Pflughaupt (pronounced "floog-halpt") from Ft. Wayne, Ind. Pflughaupt is ranked fourth in the nation at her position as a middle blocker. Along with the high ranking, she is a senior, "and she's quite aware that Head Coach Bonnie Kenny will be looking her way for leadership. "I like it a lot," Pflughaupt said of her leadership role. "It's something I have looked forward to since my freshman year." Although it may be difficult to improve on last year's 24-12 record, Pflughaupt feels confident about this year's team. "We're looking pretty good," she said. "All the skill and technique is there, it just has to all come together at once to be concrete." Pflughaupt and her teammates would travel state-wide to face tough competition day-in and day-out "That's where I got a lot of publicity, and this is where the coaches I was recruited by saw me play," Pflughaupt said. Along with USC, Pflughaupt drew the attention of Ohio State, Georgia, Indiana and Northern Illinois, but after her recruiting trip to Columbia, Pflughaupt admits she was hooked. "All the girls were nice, and I'd never had a woman for a coach," she said. "She was honest and fair ? she didn't beat around the bush. I liked that" Upon graduation, Pflughaupt hopes to use her marketing degree to land an account executive position at an advertising agency.
