Pflughaupt
as a leader

the 1988 USC Volleyball team,

She is Stephanie Pflughaupt
(pronounced "floog-halpt") from
Ft. Wayne, Ind. Pflughaupt is
ranked fourth in the nation at her
position as a middle blocker.
Along with the high ranking,
she is a senior, "and she's quite
aware that Head Coach Bonnie
Kenny will be looking her way for
leadership.
"I like it a lot," Pflughaupt said
of her leadership role. "It's something
I have looked forward to
since my freshman year."
Although it may be difficult to
improve on last year's 24-12 record,
Pflughaupt feels confident
about this year's team.
"We're looking pretty good,"
she said. "All the skill and technique
is there, it just has to all
come together at once to be
concrete."
Because she is from Indiana, a
predominantly "basketball-happy"
state, Pflughaupt had to venture
outside high school to gain her
volleyball experience. She played

"That's where I got a lot of
publicity, and this is where the
coaches I was recruited by saw me
play," Pflughaupt said.
Along with USC, Pflughaupt
drew the attention of Ohio State,
Georgia, Indiana and Northern Illinois,
but after her recruiting trip to
Columbia, Pflughaupt admits she
was hooked.
"All the girls were nice, and I'd
never had a woman for a coach,"
she said. "She was honest and fair
? she didn't beat around the bush.
I liked that"
Upon graduation, Pflughaupt
hopes to use her marketing degree
to land an account executive position
at an advertising agency. But
she hasn't given up thoughts of
trying out for the 1992 Olympic
team.
"All I want to do right now is
finish the season, see where I stand
and then consider the Olympics,"
Pflughaupt said.
