"We will solicit local community organizations, church groups and other campus organizations to go out into the community and sign people up to volunteer to read to children between the ages of one to 10 at least once a week," she said. The USC chapter is also tentatively working on an adopt-aschool or children's home project for later in the year, Martin said. "We do so many service projects because the main purposes of the organization are cultural enrichment, academic achievement, economic empowerment for the African-American community and service," she said. The proceeds from the event will go to the Richard T. Greener minority scholarship fund. The sorority works in conjunction with the Black Alumni Association, Martin said. Delta Sigma Theta is also sponsoring a South Carolina Delta Day at the State House. Deltas from across the state will meet with legislators and lobby for issues that affect the black community, Martin said. "Delta Day will show the legislators that we are a force to be reckoned with. When politicians see a large group of people that can decide their futures, they will be more receptive to the wants and needs of their constituents," she said. She said the organization wants to hold politicians accountable to what they say they will do in the African-American community. "We also want to increase the awareness of students by letting them know who their congressmen and state representatives are and how they are voting on issues that affect the African-American community," Martin said. "Delta Sigma Theta certainly keeps you busy," White said.
