Va. Gamecock sophomore Phillipe Williams won the long jump, setting a new school record with a leap of 25 feet 5 inches. By surpassing the NCAA indoor qualifying standard of 25 feet 4 inches, Williams qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship Meet. v Also setting a new school record was Dale Gerke, who captured the pole vault title with a mark of 17 feet. Other strong performances were turned in by high jumper Paul Wiechern, who won the event with a leap of 7 feet and Wade Brantley who placed third in the triple jump with a jump of 48 feet 7 inches and fifth in the pole vault at a height of 15 feet. Sprinters Nigel Stoddart and Ray Bolton qualified for the finals of the 55-meter dash and finished third and fourth respectively, and sophomore Eddie Miller finished fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.51. "It was an outstanding team performance," said head coach Charlie Strong, "especially for our first meet of the indoor season." The Lady Gamecocks were ranked third in the country in scoring offense coming into the contest, a averaging 87.9 points per game, and % they did nothing to hurt that mark on IiTiuuua)' . USC improved their record to 12-2 on the year and kept their undefeated Metro Conference record alive at 5-0. "This was a great game for us," ? Wilson said. "This game gives us a lot of confidence." After shooting 67 percent from the | field' in the first half and still trailing by a point, Florida State had to be wondering what it would take to upend the Lady Gamecocks. By game's end they were still wondering. In fact, the Lady Gamecocks have always held the upper hand in games between the two schools, as Florida State has never beaten USC in 13 tries. The Lady Seminoles looked as if they were out to change that as they built an early 6-0 lead. However, six points would be the widest margin either team would hold in the first half as the crowd on hand witnessed an exciting see-saw battle with the two teams exchanging the lead seven times. The second half started out as a 1 replay of the first as both teams traded baskets for the first two minutes, making it look as if the game might f go down to the wire. But it didn't turn out that way, as USC quickly ran off 14 straight points, swinging the momentum to son 4-6 7-8 15, Price 3-5 5-6 14, Manning ' 2-5 0-0 4, English 3-6 2-2 8, Roulston 5-5 i 0-0 10, McKoy 2-3 5-5 9, Glover 4-6 0-0 8, ) Vernau 2-3 0-1 4, Breckenridge 0-1 0-0 0, Sykes 1-1 0-2 2.
