1989 indoor season with an impressive
performance at the SanteeMarriott
Invitational in Blacksburg.
Va.
Gamecock sophomore Phillipe
Williams won the long jump, setting
a new school record with a leap of 25

NCAA indoor qualifying standard of
25 feet 4 inches, Williams qualified
for the NCAA Indoor Championship
Meet. v
Also setting a new school record
was Dale Gerke, who captured the
pole vault title with a mark of 17 feet.
Other strong performances were
turned in by high jumper Paul
Wiechern, who won the event with a
leap of 7 feet and Wade Brantley who
placed third in the triple jump with a
jump of 48 feet 7 inches and fifth in
the pole vault at a height of 15 feet.
Sprinters Nigel Stoddart and Ray
Bolton qualified for the finals of the
55-meter dash and finished third and
fourth respectively, and sophomore
Eddie Miller finished fifth in the
400-meter dash with a time of 49.51.
"It was an outstanding team performance,"
said head coach Charlie
Strong, "especially for our first meet
of the indoor season."
More than 40 schools competed in
the Santee-Marriott Invitational including
Clemson, Georgia and
Southern Mississippi.
USC travels to Johnson City,

Burney was a linebacker coach for
Mississippi State. His coaching duties
for the Gamecocks will be specified
at a later date.
Burney played for Morrison at
Tennessee-Chattanooga from
1978-79 and served under current
USC defensive coordinator Joe Lee
Dunn at New Mexico from 1983-86.
"We're pleased to announce the
addition of Coach Burney to our
staff," Morrison said. "He's been in
our system a long time, both as a
player and coach, and we're excited
to have him aboard."
Burney entered the coaching profession
in 1983, as defensive line
coach at New Mexico. From there, he
went to Tulsa University as defensive
line coach in 1987 before moving on
to Mississippi State. He also handled
the weight training programs at Tulsa
and Mississippi State.
"I'm excited about this opportunity
and believe it is a step in the right
direction," Burney said. "The
University of South Carolina
presents itself as a tremendous situation,
and the support here is outstanding.
By playing for Coach Morrison
and working under Coach Dunn, I'm
already familiar with their type of
systems and am looking forward to
getting to work."

Nancy Wilson's run-and-gun Lady
Gamecocks won going away over the
Lady Seminoles of Florida State
Monday night at Carolina Coliseum,
99-82.
The Lady Gamecocks were ranked
third in the country in scoring offense
coming into the contest,
a averaging 87.9 points per game, and
% they did nothing to hurt that mark on
IiTiuuua)' .
USC improved their record to 12-2
on the year and kept their undefeated
Metro Conference record alive at 5-0.
"This was a great game for us,"
? Wilson said. "This game gives us a
lot of confidence."
After shooting 67 percent from the
| field' in the first half and still trailing
by a point, Florida State had to be
wondering what it would take to
upend the Lady Gamecocks.
By game's end they were still
wondering. In fact, the Lady
Gamecocks have always held the upper
hand in games between the two
schools, as Florida State has never
beaten USC in 13 tries.
The Lady Seminoles looked as if
they were out to change that as they
built an early 6-0 lead. However, six
points would be the widest margin
either team would hold in the first
half as the crowd on hand witnessed
an exciting see-saw battle with the
two teams exchanging the lead seven
times.
The second half started out as a
1 replay of the first as both teams traded
baskets for the first two minutes,
making it look as if the game might
f go down to the wire.
But it didn't turn out that way, as
USC quickly ran off 14 straight
points, swinging the momentum to

USC starters scored, was capped by a

The Lady Seminoles came back to

Hunt, who missed only two shots
all night, scored 23 points and hauled
down 13 rebounds, while Banner had
19 points and 11 boards. Parker added
15 points and six rebounds, as all
five USC starters shot over 50 percent
from the field.
Sherry David turned in another
heady performance from the point
guard position, dishing out five
assists, while Lisa Diaz scored 19
points off the bench and had a teamhigh

The Lady Gamecocks will now
