The movie tells the story of two brothers who are rpunitf?H nftpr vparc Thf uniinopr (Cruise), deals in expensive cars and lives in the fast lane in California. The older, Raymond (Hoffman), is an autistic savant and lives at a mental institution in Ohio. The two meet again after the death of their father, who left most of his estate to Raymond. Because Raymond cannot understand the concept of money ? he thinks a candy bar and a compact car both cost $100 ? the millions are left under the care of his doctor. This angers the materialistic Charlie so much that he kidnaps his brother from the institution and promises to sue for custody of him. Although Raymond and Charlie have difficulty communicating because of Raymond's autistic condition, they slowly get to a point where they can understand each other ? and that gradual understanding is the source of' the movie's magical moments. In fact, Rain Man becomes a strangely compelling combination of the road picture and the buddy film ? it's a movie that chronicles the lives of two wildly different personalities who adapt to each other's idiosyncrasies as they travel across America. Not all of Rain Man works, but Levinson's steady direction lifts the low points. Cruise also comes into his own in Rain Man. Too often he has been all too willing to rely on his appearance to do his acting for him, and the results have been slick, vacuous films such as Top Gun and Cocktail. But Cruise shows that underneath the image and the glitz is a decent actor who can perform well when working with a script that gives him something to say. He still lacks the depth of Hoffman, but he has the potential to be more than a teenage heartthrob. But the film really belongs to Hoffman, who gives an amazing performance as a man who lives in his own world, a man who plans his life around People's Court and Jeopardy. Hoffman is simply superb in a demanding role; he should also earn an Academy Award nomination. Rain Man handles a difficult subject well. It never preaches, and it never panders.
