? Picking Your ^ ^ Notes Bill Sengstacken Well, for the first time since they started putting out albums, U2 has let me down. Rattle and Hum (Island Records) is a good album, but it's not great. For U2, that's a let-down. Oh, there are a couple of good songs on the album. The first single, "Desire," takes the band back to an i earlier sound, when they had a ' noticeable looseness in their music. But, except for the brilliant "God Part II" and "Van Dieman's Land," which features a strong lead vocal from The Edge, this album simply is not up to snuff. Granted, this was supposed to be a live album with a few studio tracks tacked on, but as it turned out, only six of the 17 tracks are live recordings. The rest consists of new stuff ? new stuff that just doesn't rank with such inspired works as The Joshua Tree and The Unforgettable Fire. The one song that really gets under my skin is "Angel of Harlem," which features sonu laughably outof-place horn playing from The Memphis Horns. Horns simply do not belong in U2 songs. If you have to call it anything, call it Rattle and Ho-Hum. I must give credit to R.E.M., though. I was waiting for the release of Green (Warner Bros. Records) simply so I could slag it. After all, the last album for their old label, I.R.S. Records, was, at best, uninspired. But I find myself liking Green more with each listen. The album kicks off with a monster of a guitar sound on a hookfilled "Pop Song 89," then moves through the next two songs at breakneck speed. Once again Michael Stipe's vocals are as clear as a bell. But what is lost in hidden meaning is made up in powerful lyrics, such as those found on "World Leader Pretend" ? "I recognize the weapons. I've used them well. / I've a rich understanding of my finest defenses." Give a firm Dat on the back to Peter Buck, whose mandolin playing on "You Are The Everything" makes for the album's standout. Really nice to see that $12 million contract with Warner Bro's hasn't ruined this band. Nice job. Have you ever heard someone sing so well that you have this wild desire to marry that person? Well, Sam (as in Samantha) Phillips has such a voice. She has a breathy, airy way of singing reminiscent of The Bangles' Susannah Hoffs, but with much more inspired material to draw from. On The Indescribable Wow (Virgin Records), Phillips works closely with boyfriend T-Bone Burnett, who both produces this album and plays guitar throughout. Anyone familiar with Burnett's production work won't be disappointed. Like Mitch Easter, Burnett has shimmering acoustic guitars leading the way, interwtaving with Phillips' wonderfully full vocals. | With the exception of two songs co-written with Burnett, Phillips wrote all the material on the album. Highlights include the super opening track "I Don't Want to Fall in Love," and the orchestral "What Do I Do?" But each song has merits of its own. All in all a strong album. The IFM Banquet gives international students an opportunity to understand and participate in an American cultural tradition. Unlike Christmas and Easter, i Thanksgiving is celebrated only in America. Raj Aluri, i founder of IFM, said the event draws "easily 250 international students each year."
