Class Fans' treatment of quarterback , not prettiest sight at Carolina j Excuse the poor grammar, but, Carolina, you got no class. s'L You never boo your own quarterback, no matter how bad you h,f think he's doing. Todd Ellis has had a couple of rotten weekends ? twice the , ^Gamecocks have^been blanked, once by Florida State and once -id by Georgia Tech. n . 1 J .1 C 1: ...n? ?Uo.T + ^ UUl as Daa as mose leeilllgb iiiuai, uc, lilt) inuai paic iicai iu '-" having to deal with rude, obnoxious fans who are supposed to be cheering you on through thick and thin. Carolina fans have * -traditionally been real rowdy through the good, thick times, but they kind of turn their backs real quick in the bad, thin times. Maybe we can play a little pretend game here and make believe that those who booed Ellis were just Clemson fans in disguise, here at USC to avenge our vicious taunting of Rodney " Williams in last year's 20-7 win over Clemson. But that doesn't work ? because we know the Clemson fans mare waiting for this coming Saturday to inflict Ellis with ^-Rodney's Revenge, and also because we know who these people are. They were standing right next to us through most of the 1 game, and they dressed in the same clothes as we do, garnet or ,b( black or both, and they yelled when we scored, but they also had hs Ihe unmitigated gall to boo our own quarterback. w.?-:; You take one look at them and you know there's no way they cbuld do any better, and they'd most probably do a whole lot worse. But there they are, screaming for blood and asking for a replacement quarterback. ^3' Todd Ellis isn't a perfect quarterback, not in the least. He malffc mictnlrpc ac mnct humans drv Rut hp also can accomnlish a lot of interesting, exciting things. The same people who booed /t .him Saturday were hooting and hollering like brain dead t, rednecks for him when he threw a touchdown pass to Robert ?-Brooks Saturday. But the referees took that one away from him, * and it suddenly got blotted from the minds of the fans. Dickie DeMasi is not in Ellis' class. He hasn't had much playing time, so he asked head coach Joe Morrison for a transfer. That doesn't show much loyalty to this team or to this school. And he's only thrown for 29 yards. This is the quarterback ^ everyone's clamoring for? Everytime Ellis has been booed ? and it happened last season 4 as well as this season ? he forgave the fans who did it by saying ^ o-it didn't bother him at all, but he's probably lying. Those boos must hurt worse than root canal without an anesthetic, and his denial, his forgiveness, shows a class that is certainly lacking in ? those who were booing him. pTlt You see, the really important numbers can do all the talking -. for Todd Ellis. Since he's come to USC, he's won 15 games, ' 'three more than he's lost, and he's tied two. Most importantly, " he's beaten Clemson once and never lost to the Tigers, tying jaj _'them the first time he played against them. He's thrown passes for 2,088 yards this season, and threw for t*6*;226 yards his first two years, putting his career statistic at J" >8^294 yards. He's the quarterback who looked at the USC and ? ,**the NCAA record books and said, "Ain't nothing but a thing," and then proceeded to eat those records alive, one by one. ^ Yeah, he's thrown for a bunch of interceptions, and the of- t0 fense is still struggling right now. But we're winning, and a win on is a win is a win is a win is a win. sa Ellis is now going to have to head up to hillbilly country H( Irn/Miiinn o mVinla Knn/-?Vi rtf Viic Aiim fane mia lit hp i ninino in and lVli\J V> 1113 a VV 11U1W UU11V11 \JL llio VTTH iuiu vv aaa ??AA%? We're back. Wasn't that great? Anyway, now we go to a thoughtful, provocative piece about attendance and rowdy fans. Where's the stupid button? Oh, there it is. And the stadium was hardly futt. If it had been, the Middies would probably have gone home with cotton swabs stuffed in their ears on the bus back to Annapolis. Editorial comment ? Why didn't we try that a week earlier? We always do it to penny-ante teams like Navy, but never against the big boys. We did it to Duke and The Citadel in '84 and '85 but never for the big games. Oh well. And now, for an obnoxious side note, we bring you to stands where USC's soon-to-be-graduated, perennial gadfly is walking all around with the political sign she was babbling about in a letter to the editor in The Gamecock Friday.
