Morris By The Associated Press No one can accuse USC football coach Joe Morrison of being unwilling to change. Two years ago, Morrison installed the run-and-shoot offense. The run-and-shoot was a highexcitement but high-risk attack that had its problems when the 19thranked Gamecocks got near the goal line. Morrison hopes his new offense, which will be overseen by new offensive coordinator A1 Groh, will make the Gamecocks a more consistent team. "We might not have as many big plays as we've had in the past," Morrison said, "but we believe we will be effective. We hope to control the football more this year and eliminate the costly turnovers." The Gamecocks finished 8-4 last season and were ranked 15th in the final Associated Press poll. USC ended the season with a 30-13 loss to Louisiana State in the Gator Bowl, leaving the Gamecocks 0-7 in bowls. The Gamecocks open the 1988 season Sept. 3 at home against North Carolina. For the third straight season, the Gamecocks will be led by quarterback Todd Ellis, a 6-foot-3, 203-pound junior from Greensboro, N.C., who is among the best in the nation. Ellis, who was on the cover of several preseason publications and already is being touted as Heisman Trophy candidate by the school and the media, has thrown for 6,226 yards in two years and is more than halfway to the NCAA mark of 11,425 yards set by San Diego State's Todd Santos. But Ellis has also thrown 46 interceptions vs. 30 touchdowns during that two-year period. Last year, he completed 241 of 432 passes for 3,206 yards and 10 TDs while having 24 passes picked off. Three receivers have graduated, including Sterling Sharpe, a first-round draft choice of the Green Bay Packers; two other returnees have been injured; and the top returnee, senior Ryan Bethea, has been ruled ineligible because he accepted plane fare from an attorney to fly to California. With the losses, the top returning receiver is Green with 29 receptions for 262 yards. The eight top prospects to catch Ellis' tosses this year caught 23 passes in 1987 ? and the Gamecocks must also find a reliable tight end as well. But Morrison insists the Gamecocks can make do with what's left. "We have some talented folks," Morrison said. "Even though we're going to be inexperienced, we have some people who can catch the football." Up front, the Gamecocks are )BICS* SMESTER Classes sponsored An 1+^ Vx ui. iicaiui ucgm lay- v, ifej. Running back Harold Green, a 6-2, 212-pound junior, is a breakaway threat who rushed for 1,022 yards and 15 touchdowns in 1987. "One of the reasons we moved to a multiple offensive set is to get the ball into his hands more often," Morrison said. Keith Bing, a 6-0, 208-pound senior who rushed for 305 yards last year, and Mike Dingle, a 6-3, 230-pound sophomore who was academically ineligible last year, will be among those joining ureen in the backfield.
