Red-shirt as a freshman McKernan res By The Associated Press Five years ago, Matt McKernan was like many college freshmen football players. He wasn't ready for the big time. _____ So he sat out a year, opting to be red-shirted. Looking back, McKernan is convinced it wasn't only the right move I but a decisive one as he prepares for his final season at f, mm South Carolina. \ "I'm very glad I red- V w shirted," the 6-foot-2, 235-pound linebacker said. "I ucneve me reu-snirung policy MMHPmbbmbb is the best thing the NCAA's Matt McKeman ever done. I feel very strongly about redshirting. "When you're a freshman getting red-shirted, and you are getting knocked around every day for three hours a day, it's not such a good idea," McKeman said. "But as you get older and your eligibility is up ? and your graduation date is further than that ? I know quite a few guys who were not red-shirted who left here wishing they were red-shirted." McKernan said red-shirting allowed him to mature on the field and off. As a result, McKernan is now a starter for and a graduate of South Carolina, having earned a B.S. degree in finance this summer. He is now in graduate school. "It gave me time to develop," McKernan said in a recent interview. "I was in no way different from a lot of other freshmen in that I was not ready to play when I came here." In 1985, he was a backup linebacker, playing in 10 of 11 games and coming up with 10 tackles. The next season, McKernan was a part-time starter and had 57 tackles. Last year, he was the team's third-leading tackier with 91, with his best performance coming against secondranked Nebraska when he had 14 tackles. The steady, hardhitting senior had 13 tackles against Clemson and 10 tackles and an interception against Miami. McKernan, a native of Daytona Beach, Fla., missed spring drills this year because of an injured right toe ? an injury he has had unknowingly had for two years. "It ended up being an unattached tendon, a torn tendon on the right big toe," he said. "I was on crutches for three weeks, but I'm over 100 percent (better) now because I had been playing on it for two years as an injured toe." Now that he's completely healthy, McKernan is anxious for his last year to begin. But he said there is a different feeling this season as he prepares to wear the garnet and black of the Gamecocks for the final time. "My perspective has changed very greatly," he said. "It's something the coaches tell you, that the upperclassmen tell you ? how you're going to feel when you're there ? but you don't know how it feels until it's your ifth year and it may quite possibly be your last season paying football after most of us have played for 15 years. "That puts a lot of drive in your butt, and you'll get going." lash?
