WUSC offers 'fr< By KRISTI POTTS Features reporter WUSC-90.5, the campus radio station, offers a freeform alternative for USC students. Defining free-form alternative is not easy. "Some people call it techno-pop;some people call it punk;some call it new music. Basically, if you hear it somewhere else, you will not hear it here. We also play things you cannot hear anywhere else," said former Program Director Sharon Amundson, an English student. "The station's goal is to play a wider range of music. The radio station requires its disc jockeys to play 50 percent new music," said former music director Heather Young, an English junior. WUSC does not play Top 40 pop, country and soul because this music is being played on other Columbia stations. The campus radio station does not compete with Columbia stations since it is publicly supported. "We are licensed as a non-competative, non-profit, * - * - v.<juiauvjuai tduiu sLciiiun, saiu lormer station manager Paige Brodsky. "We want to educate our listeners, and if we were to play Top 40 or any other music that is played on other established radio stations in Columbia, we would not be educating them as much as we could." During the summer months, the station operates for 12 hours. In two weeks, the program hours return to 24. Brodsky, a graduate, said there was a loss of personnel due to graduation in '87. The loss especially affected the 15 J'OFF Men's/Women's hair cuts. WUSC was rated one of the top eight college radio stations in the country in the spring 1987 issue of America. Young said the station plays local bands and wants to play more. If a local band wants its music to played on WUSC, they need to send in an on-the-air quality tape. She said the station often receives tapes that are too poor to be used. r ^ r ^ I I 4CafM WE CARRY A FU HHHj PETS AND PEr Exotic Fresh Water Fi Marine Fish Small ^ And all the supplies y Since 194 10% OFF t rat $8.00 ?u/0 wrr 1 STUDENTS i PURCHA expires 9-4 2712 Devine Street GOT A NEWS TIP?1 R I |1 CALL 777-7726 | 4?
