Office as minority By CASSIE YANG Features editor The upcoming fall semester marks the 25th anniversary of the acceptance of the first minority students at use. Three students, one graduate and two undergraduates, were admitted to USC. There are now about 2,600 minority students enrolled at USC and numerous programs and services geared toward the minority student. The Office of Minority Student Affairs assists minority students in their academic, social and cultural development. "The Minority Student Affairs serves as a liaison between the students and the university," said Ralph Johnson, Assistant Dean of Student Life for Minority Students. "It's for the enhancement and retention of minority students and enhancing the quality of life at the university." The major programs and services coordinated through the office are: Advising the Association of AfroAmerican Students and assisting in the coordination of Black History Month activities. The Minority Student Graduate School Fair is held every October. The program is designed to encourage minority students to attend graduate/professional school. She now works with the office because she said she was familiar with the office, needed credit, on-hand experience and had a strong interest in it. Mills has worked on organizing a conference and has done research on minority students. "I think it's very interesting. It (The Minority Student Affairs) promotes awareness and shows the revival of particular programs for students. It gives a better look at what's going on. It's been a growing experience, and I've enjoyed it," Mills said. b ?!S1 iTCLA! But thanks to a major writers' festival planned for September 9-11 in Charleston, the state's literary output may soon start to attract the recognition many feel it deserves. The event, Carolina Connections: A National Literary Festival for Writers and Readers, will feature over 75 well-known or emerging writers and scholars who live in South Carolina or have close ties to the state. The festival comes at a time when South Carolina can lay claim to more novelists, poets and short story authors than at any time in its past. In this century the state has produced a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and a novel which became America's most famous opera. South Carolina is also home to a National Book Awardwinning poet and novelist. "We not only have more writers than we've ever had before, but more : R v E 5S J Craig.
