Office as
minority
By CASSIE YANG
Features editor
The upcoming fall semester marks
the 25th anniversary of the acceptance
of the first minority students at
use.
Three students, one graduate and
two undergraduates, were admitted
to USC. There are now about 2,600
minority students enrolled at USC
and numerous programs and services
geared toward the minority student.
The Office of Minority Student
Affairs assists minority students in
their academic, social and cultural
development.
"The Minority Student Affairs
serves as a liaison between the
students and the university," said
Ralph Johnson, Assistant Dean of
Student Life for Minority Students.
"It's for the enhancement and
retention of minority students and
enhancing the quality of life at the
university."
The major programs and services
coordinated through the office are:
Advising the Association of AfroAmerican
Students and assisting in
the coordination of Black History
Month activities.
The Minority Student Graduate
School Fair is held every October.
The program is designed to encourage
minority students to attend
graduate/professional school.
The Minority Student Honors
Night Program is held in April in
conjunction with University Awards
Day to recognize students who have
excelled in academic, leadership, and
campus/community service arenas.

facing minority freshmen and identify
strategies to enhance retention.
Minority Student Welcome is an
annual program for incoming
freshmen where the leaders of the
major student organizations welcome
the freshmen and solicit their
involvement.
Workshops on Cultural Sensitivity
and Diversity are conducted upon request,
for any university division,
department, class or student
organization.
The Minority Assistance Peer Program
assists minority freshmen in
becomming oriented to USC by providing
them a trained peer counselor.
Co-sponsorship of the annual USC
Careeer Fair, in conjunction with the
USC Career Center.
Lisa Mills, an intern with Minority
Student Affairs, said she used the office
to help with projects for a
graduate Masters program. She now
works with the office because she
said she was familiar with the office,
needed credit, on-hand experience
and had a strong interest in it. Mills
has worked on organizing a conference
and has done research on
minority students.
"I think it's very interesting. It
(The Minority Student Affairs) promotes
awareness and shows the
revival of particular programs for
students. It gives a better look at
what's going on. It's been a growing
experience, and I've enjoyed it,"
Mills said.

Mention South Carolina and most
people think of things like shrimp
boats, stock cars and veils of Spanish
moss hanging from ancient oaks.
But thanks to a major writers'
festival planned for September 9-11
in Charleston, the state's literary output
may soon start to attract the
recognition many feel it deserves.
The event, Carolina Connections:
A National Literary Festival for
Writers and Readers, will feature
over 75 well-known or emerging
writers and scholars who live in
South Carolina or have close ties to
the state.
The festival comes at a time when
South Carolina can lay claim to more
novelists, poets and short story
authors than at any time in its past.
In this century the state has produced
a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and a
novel which became America's most
famous opera. South Carolina is also
home to a National Book Awardwinning
poet and novelist.

"One major goal of Carolina Connections
is to bring the public
together with our writers to promote
wider readership of South Carolina
authors and encourage emerging
authors to produce," she said.
"We want the public to be involved,
to be proud of South Carolina's
literary reputation and see writers as
important, familiar resources. When
this conference is over, I think people
will have a new appreciation of the
state's writers," she said.
The three day conference includes
a series of workshops, panel discussions
and marathon readings by the
authors themselves.
In addition, a book fair is scheduled
for the sale of works by the guest
writers ? both in print and out-ofprint.
And throughout the festival,
Informal gatherings have been planned
to give writers and readers a
ehance to talk and get to know one
another on a more personal level.
Those interested in participating in
workshops or other activities are urged
