One of these new Midwestern bands, the BoDeans, will try to prove that Nov. 30 at Greenest reet's. 'The band comes out of Waukesha, Wis., and follows on the heels of another popular Wisconsin group, the Violent Femmes. i ncir iirsi aioum was tms past year's Love & Hope <& Sex & Dreams, the title taken from a lyric from "Shattered" by the Rolling Stones. Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams firmly established the band's style of deft drumming and clean guitar playing. Perhaps the most distinguished feature is the singing of Beau BoDean (Kurt Newmann) and Sammy BoDean (Sammy Lianas), which recalls the scratchy passion of Bob Dylan's best vocal work. The topic of their songs is almost invariably love and love lost. Now, a year later, the BoDeans return with their second album, Outside Looking In. The LP, produced bv Talking Head and fellow Wisconsinite Jerry Harrison, finds the band changing slightly toward a more detached and contemplative style. Although the sound of the BoDeans has changed, the theme of their songs remains the same: unrequited love. Standout tracks on Outside Looking In include "Dreams," "Pick Up the Pieces" and "Someday." Another song, "Only Love," is beginning to pick up some airplay on area radio stations, although WUSC-FM has been playing the band all along. The aloofness . . .the ethereal acid rock . . .the razor-like lyrics that slice society's madness onto vinyl. . . Eventually, the distance the band maintained from its audience, both in conccrt and in the press, created an image larger than life. It seems almost sacrilegious to attempt staging a resurrection. But an attempt has been made and a successful one at that. Clearlight, from Ontario, Canada, pulls it off. The band stages an impressive show, backed by a 12,000-watt sound system and a 78,000-watt light show. They have kafellas* this past Tuesday. The hand n i?tt:? ! 9 T.nrni ! The band's first set included Floyd material, "Have a Cigar" and the amazing "Run Like Hell." The band also covered other timeless tunes such as David Bowie's "Space Oddity." The second set was pure Floyd, and the band dipped back into the record-breaking Dark Side Of The Moon, The Wall, Wish You Were Here, Meddle and other Pink classics. But what was most impressive was this tribute band's capacity to put out memorable material of its own. The original songs oddly combine a hint of Genesis combined with singer/guitarist Jerry Laufman's Geddy Lee brand of nasally highpitched vocals. The band has not yet released a record, though one is in the works, and that makes for another piece of interesting information; this albumless Canadian group rakes in American dollars. Clearlight is the only unrecorded group that has placed in Performance magazine's "Tops In Performance" list. "The Pink Floyd material is our bread and butter." Laufman said. CONC K TON! J) But regardless of how lucrative it may be and how authentic it may sound, it's time Clearlight got down to the studio and pumped out some of that potential-packed original stuff, because, eventually, the greatness of a band comes from within.
