Newsmakers U.S. district judge stays execution v.uuuivii?ia ? rrea singleton is oack in his original cell on death row after spending two days preparing for the possibility that he would be executed Friday. U.S District Judge Clyde Hamilton postponed the execution indefinitely. He said the stay of execution issued Wednesday afternoon was needed to give the federal court enough time to consider Singleton's "substantial" claims in his petition for a new trial. Singleton, convicted of raping, robbing and strangling Elizabeth Sease Lominick, 74, of Newberry County, with a bedsheet after escaping from prison, claims he was coerced into confessing and received ineffective legal counsel. The 40-year-old Williamsburg County native was moved before dawn Tuesday from death row to the "death house," a small brick building on the grounds of the Central Correctional Institution that is only a few strides from the wooden electric chair. New drug may slow effects of AIDS CHARLESTON ? Some AIDS victims in Charleston, Richland and Spartanburg counties soon will receive a free drug intended to prolong and improve their lives. A $160,000 federal grant to buy Retrovir has been awarded to the state Department of Health and Environmental Control. South Carolina has had 152 reported AIDS cases. As of Aug. 31, there have been 89 deaths. The grant money is enough to treat at least 16 patients in the state, said Doris Lister, state associate director of public health iiut aiug. The drug is used to treat people already infected with acquired immune deficiency syndrome, Ms. Lister said. "It docs not kill the virus, but it stops it from multiplying. It makes them feel a lot better," she said. "But it's not a cure. Wc suspect that it's going to prolong their lives." Condom machines appear on campuses _ A This fall a seemingly endless string of campuses has added condoms to the candy bars, sodas, cigarettes and other items students can buy in local vending machines. Once confined to rural gas stations and sleazy bars, condom vending machines now can be found at the universities of Minnesota, Cincinnati, Nebraska and Florida, among scores of other campuses. The reason, the condom sponsors say, is to help control the spread of AIDS. The sponsors said vending machines give students anonymous, convenient 24-hour access to condoms, an important value because sexual encounters are often unplanned and spontaneous. The list of entertainers who sang and then met with reporters to speak up for the nation's small farmers included Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge, Arlo Guthrie, Emmylou Harris, Asleep at the Wheel and John Denver.
