He said the stay of execution issued Wednesday afternoon was needed to give the federal court enough time to consider Singleton's "substantial" claims in his petition for a new trial. Singleton, convicted of raping, robbing and strangling Elizabeth Sease Lominick, 74, of Newberry County, with a bedsheet after escaping from prison, claims he was coerced into confessing and received ineffective legal counsel. The 40-year-old Williamsburg County native was moved before dawn Tuesday from death row to the "death house," a small brick building on the grounds of the Central Correctional Institution that is only a few strides from the wooden electric chair.
