Dave Smyth singled Cromer home; then Charlie Aldrich doubled to left to score Songini. Garrett Carter then singled both Smyth and Aldrich home to put USC up 4-2. Ah, now there's a surprise. &&kfr III of Lake City, S.C., is f dl teaching the USC baseball fans mHBHB * that life is full of surprises, and % ^jul in the process, he's learning that rule himself. L? When Cromer came to USC, the Gamccocks were just saying goodbye to their third consecutive 40-win season and to number 31 and 1986 MVP Jeff "Sarge" Morris. In Morris, USC had nine doubles, a .354 batting average, 75 runs batted in and 19 homers. Without him, they had an empty uniform. Now they have a new number 31 ? Cromer. Cromer is batting only .276 and only has seven hits, but there's something different about Cromer this year. His career batting average is down 181 points from his high school career average of .451, but that's not what has made Cromer's performance different this season. The difference lies in those four home runs. Those four towering shots have easily cleared Sarge Frye Field fences that are 25 feet further away mis season ana nave opened the eyes of USC fans, including Cromer. "I only hit six in my whole high school career. So anytime I hit a home run it's something," Cromer coaches endor cent to 35 percent, on whether the 3-point an abrupt should remain at its present distance ? iches have feet, 9 inches from the basket ? or be mc )y such an back 9 inches to the distance used in inte: ime's chief tional play. d. "Your first college at bat you're gonna be nervous as crap. He put me in the eighth inning, and we were killing Newberry. I just said 'Don't strike out.' First pitch I hit a home run, and we went from there." Cromer, coached in high school by his father, Roy Cromer II, is USC's shortstop of the future, says Raines. Pleased with the present, Cromer said he didn't expect to get a chance to display his defensive abilities, let alone hit four home runs. "I didn't expect any playing time. Maybe the seventh or eighth inning of the games we play," said the 6-3 right-handed infielder. "Coach put me in late in the game for defense. I just hit the ball good that day, and he stuck me back in there." For Cromer, "hitting the ball good" means pilling up a .955 slugging percentage and collecting 9 RBIs. Still, Cromer insists there is no pressure. "Who's going to expect a freshman not to make an error or two?" says Cromer. se 3-point line lin/? minlrlrntA-r J - " iiiv iiniiioi.iai.uis uuu qa pcrceni 01 ttie 19 sportswriters. >ved But the biggest change of heart was on the rna- part of the coaches, 66 percent of whom had told Steitz last spring they didn't want the teitz 3-pointer. : re- The coaches' complaints continued neet throughout the first half of the season, "then :AA they started discovering how to use it and :on- what it could do for them," Steitz said. line Looking to next season, the committee will consider various schemes to end the parade to the the foul line in the closing minutes of the 3ivi- game, he said. en- One of the most attractive proposals is to nior award two free throws to a player who is foulthe ed intentionally and then give ball possession to his team. port That proposal received the support of 58 g it. percent of the coaches and 65 percent of the arl- refcrfpc jose tour license. aElEaar Back to the Street Tour Th?
