The Gamccock baseball team is off to another

that rule himself. L?
When Cromer came to USC, the Gamccocks were
just saying goodbye to their third consecutive
40-win season and to number 31 and 1986 MVP Jeff
"Sarge" Morris.
In Morris, USC had nine doubles, a .354 batting
average, 75 runs batted in and 19 homers.
Without him, they had an empty uniform.
Now they have a new number 31 ? Cromer.
Cromer is batting only .276 and only has seven
hits, but there's something different about Cromer
this year.
His career batting average is down 181 points
from his high school career average of .451, but
that's not what has made Cromer's performance
different this season.
The difference lies in those four home runs.
Those four towering shots have easily cleared
Sarge Frye Field fences that are 25 feet further away
mis season ana nave opened the eyes of USC fans,
including Cromer.
"I only hit six in my whole high school career. So
anytime I hit a home run it's something," Cromer

"Your first college at bat
you're gonna be nervous as crap. He put me in the
eighth inning, and we were killing Newberry. I just
said 'Don't strike out.' First pitch I hit a home run,
and we went from there."
Cromer, coached in high school by his father,
Roy Cromer II, is USC's shortstop of the future,
says Raines.
Pleased with the present, Cromer said he didn't
expect to get a chance to display his defensive
abilities, let alone hit four home runs.
"I didn't expect any playing time. Maybe the
seventh or eighth inning of the games we play," said
the 6-3 right-handed infielder.
"Coach put me in late in the game for defense. I
just hit the ball good that day, and he stuck me back
in there."
For Cromer, "hitting the ball good" means
pilling up a .955 slugging percentage and collecting
9 RBIs.
Still, Cromer insists there is no pressure.
"Who's going to expect a freshman not to make
an error or two?" says Cromer.
