'Slogans in stud "Peace through strength" "Work will make you free" i-Au tiuiMii m ucicnsc ot liberty is no crime" Slogans arc powerful things, particularly when they are used by skilled politicians in convincing the public to follow a course these leaders find profitable. l or the past 200 years, however, the greatest strength of America has been, as Lincoln said, that "You can't fool all j ^H?f the people all of the time." In our pluralistic society, enough different opinions have existed so that, so far, we have been able to pick a generally progressive course from among the many, many worse alternatives open to us. We have not, yet, traded our diversity of opinion for one slogan, or set of 1 slogans, to promote only one interest, jj It is too bad that some citizens of the United States do not agree with our history of diversity. Now. particularly, authoritarians such as Mr. Garfield (letter, The Gamecock, ! Nov. 3) seem all too willing to replace this free exchange, with its sometimes exuberant forms | expression (Lowcry, letter, The Gamecock, I Oct. 24), with nationally-mandated adherence to one idea, one policy, or one slogan, such as "peace through strength." Simplifying the , complicated and often frustrating process of working for peace into a slogan will do little The Great > Take a < * , I IHp So 1 J TI(iERBUII\ *1 PMI KAPPA PRI KAP I III I \( (I I I \ I -W ?l j ?
