?? ??????? 1 Sports RFJil' Pep Talk By Tom Gatto USC's well-k women's ba: There is a basketball team at USC that people don't seem to know or care about. The Lady Gamecocks arc alive and well and in first place in the Metro Conference under head coach Nancy Wilson. But no one seems to bother going to the Coliseum to root them on. Attendance tor the season has averaged just more than 500, and the largest "crowd" for one game was the 937 who decided to grace the arena with their presence last Monday when USC played Clernson. On Jan. 27, the Lady uamecocKs played Louisville at home in an important conference game. The announced attendance was 234. That figure probably included the teams, the press and the Coliseum workers. It would have been stretching the truth to say there were even 150 spectators in the Coliseum that night. That's pitiful, absolutely pitiful. Why the apathy, folks? This team plays good ball. They have an All-America candidate in forward Brantley Southers, who is averaging more than 20 points a game and is the second highest scorer in USC women's history. They boast the school's all-time assist leader (for men and women) in guard Mindy Ballon. Center Sharon Gilmore is second on the all-time rebounding list lor Carolina women. And with Monday night's victory over Cincinnati, USC won its sixth straight game. Lven (hough their record is only 12-10 (8-1 in the Metro), they've played six Top Twenty teams this season and will face defending national champion Old Dominion tonight in Columbia. That's a pretty good schedule, better than the men's in terms of quality opponents. Women's basketball has remained a poor stepchild here, and they've now been around for 11 seasons. Last week, a new Atlantic Coast Conference attendance record for a women's game was set at Virginia. More than 11,000 people were at the game, in an I * * uiliki tiuu nuiu^ jum iiiuic man 9,000. The school got behind the program and showed their loyalty. That's real support, folks. Granted, we're not going to get that kind of crowd for any basketball game (even the men's game against Clemson wasn't a sellout here), but for the amount of talent that the women's squad has on the floor and eiven their winning background, we should be able to get a few thousand in the stands. Maybe the women can't play above the rim and produce the earth-shattering slam dunks that we expect from the men. Perhaps they aren't as fast, or as strong, or as big as the guys. But that doesn't take away from their athletic skills or their desire to win. The University of Texas averages 5,000 people per women's game. That's about as manv as the IJSC mpn nttrart and maybe the Lady Gamecocks will never receive that kind of support on a regular basis. Still, there's no excuse to have less than 1,000 people come to a home game against your intrastate rival, especially when a lot of them were Clemson rooters that traveled down to Columbia for the game. The record crowd at the Coliseum for a women's game, believe it or not, is 6,219, when Carolina nlaved UCLA in 1981. That seems to be an unrealistic goal at the present time, given the attitude of the fair-weather "fans" here who don't think good basketball is worth their time. And that's pitiful.
