: < ""H Sports A Monday, January 20, 1986 USC barely nips Central Florida By JOHN BOYETTE Sports editor Many of the 4,736 fans who expected USC to romp past Central Florida Saturday night were surprised when they left Frank McGuire Arena. After a pair of close losses to Metro Conference foes Memphis State and Virginia Tech, the consen sus was the Gamecocks would have their way with the Fighting Knights. But USC won by only six, 79-73, to improve its season record to 9-6. The Gamecocks led all the way, but foul trouble midway through the second period forced head coach Bill Foster to go to the bench earlier than he anticipated. The game also featured improved performances from Duane Kendall and Perry Dozier. Kendall came off the bench to score 15 points on six-of-nine shooting from the floor and collect 11 rebounds. Making his first collegiate start, Dozier contributed nine points and four rebounds. Keith James led the Gamecocks in scoring with 18 points. After a sloppy start by both teams, USC broke out on top 10-3 with 14:31 left in the first half on the strength of three fast-break baskets. The Gamecocks increased their lead to 18 points at one stretch before going to the locker room at halftime with a comfortable 40-26 lead. "I was reallv nleased with the wav lames arid Kendall played tonight," Foster said. "But I was disappointed we got in such early foul trouble." The foul trouble came with just over 13 minutes remaining and USC holding a 10-point lead at 49-39. Linwood Moye and Darryl Martin both picked up their fourth fouls in the space of 16 seconds. In addition, Perry Dozier was playing with three fouls. But Dozier responded by scoring the Gamecocks' next five points to increase the lead to 13. USC increased the lead to as much as 17 at one point in the second half, but Central Florida hung tough and cut the final margin to six with three straight buckets at the end of the game. Foster credited Central Florida with shooting well, but faulted his squad for turning the ball over and getting into foul trouble. "We thought we could run on them, and we didn't run very well," Foster said. "They shot well. They kept their poise very nicely. ??U/n 1 -I ttv, taujcu lilt lUI liuvci ;> CIS uppubcu 1<J incir defense. We've got to do a better job of staying out of foul trouble." Kendall's 15 points represented his best effort of the season. He entered the game averaging 4.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. "1 felt good about the way I was shooting," he said. "I'm just going to keep on playing hard and do the best I can." "We went in respecting Central Florida.
