First, it is impossible to argue reality when dealing in a stilltheoretical concept. The SDI program has begun development only recently, and therefore conclusive results are still years away. Secondly, our "rhetoric" con sisted of a sincerc attempt to express the need for SDI in humanitarian terms. It is unfortunate, however, that sonic have become so blinded by the technological liabilities of our culture that they ignorantly cast aside any hope for a solution before that solution can materialize . Thirdly, the immature remark on our "token" women comes from an obviously uninformed and sexist source. Having a member on a panel in a debate does not necessitate that they make an oral contribution. In fact, Lisa was crucial to the debate by noting our opponent's points for response. I should point out that Lisa is so capablc in her responsibilities that she will soon be assuming the office of president of the USC College Republicans. Finally, the "arrogant superiority" that one reader mistakenly perceived is actually Now in the Univ EBB5BC1E6 1 ~~ Pi Kappa Alpha Drei Just $2.50 could i Use I1 "Your Partner UNIVI-KSITY , u ' ? It is this hope, a hope that will make nuclear was a distant memory, that promises to restore a safe, free world to our posterity. f-v 1J uonaia weaver USC College Republicans Assaults often occur at USC She let out a blood-curdling scream as he pulled her towards the vents, where they would be well hidden. As he threatened to stab her, she screamed more violently. The struggle had only lasted a few minutes, though they seemed like hours to her when help arrived on the scene. The attacker was pulled off and chased five blocks as he ran from the crime he had just committed. Does this description sound to you like an cxccrpt from a T.V. show? Well it's not. A month or so ago, The Gamecock covered a story concerning a female student who was sexually assaulted behind Russell House. The implication was that the girl had been at fault because she was walking alone behind the Russell House at 12:30 at night. For one thing, the walkway behind Russell House is a fairly well lit area, and a well traveled path. It is not the same remote part of campus that no one has ever seen before. We all know that it's unsafe to walk around at night, by yourself, but does that give someone tne right to attack you if for some reason you are put in a situation where you have to walk alone.? The attacker knew that there would be an unlocked equipment room where he could drag his victim to. How did he know this? What if you were that girl? Of course, you'd never walk anywhere by yourself, but let's just say that your friend had walked you to the library, letting you walk the rest of the way. He sees you walk safely across the patio and feels confident that you will get back to your room as he notices a couple walk by you. He turns and walks away. You take another step and zap, you're grabbed. Is it your fault for walking alone? Is it anyone's fault? Students each year are victimized, and yet sacrificed by Carolina to protect it's image of being a secure campus. When a friend went down to the police station, she was given the impression that attacks happen frequently. They even mentioned where the attacker ran to and hid, since it's the usual hiding place for them. The author suggests that the police enforce the law rather than enforce security. That's funny; I thought the law was to ensure the security of people, to ensure their safety. Do we lock people up because they broke the law, or could it remotely be linked to ensuring the safety of people by locking up offenders? It seems to me that a police officer is enforcing security when he enforces the law. It's nice to know that the campus police has officers that are No. 1 and No. 2 shooters in the state. I'm glad that they've had plenty of practice on the fir ing range. To tell you the truth though, I'd rather know what they are doing to protect the students. Addressing The Gamecock, the title of Mr. Menkhaus' letter, "Political group gave false data," is inexcusably misleading. The College Republicans did not ? state at any point during that meeting that the views of Mr. Slimp were representative of the views of the group; therefore, the group did not give ialsc data. The group did, in fact, invite a speaker to give his views on the situation in South Africa. As Mr. Menkhaus knows, as well as anyone else picking up The Gamecock lately, the College Republicans are willing to listen to all views on a topic, conservative or liberal. I concede that Mr. S1 i mp presented an ultraconscrvativc position that 1 do not personally agree with. That docs not, however, detract from the posistion I present in this letter.
