D.n?.. uy naauuioicu riosa South Carolina's overall crime rate dropped 1.3 percent in 1984, hut violent crime ? led by a sharp increase in the number of reported rapes ? rose 2.4 percent, the State Law Enforcement Division reported Monday. Incidents of rape increased 16.2 percent last year, a dramatic reversal of an unprecedented 8 percent drop in rapes in 1983. "Rane was the bin surprise this year." said SLED spokesman Hugh Munn. "The problem is we have only the raw statistics to work with. We don't really know why something happens, just that it docs." The crime rate monitors seven offenses: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, breaking and entering, larceny and motor vehicle theft. SLED's statewide figures arc fed to the FBI, which compiles the national and regional trends and percentages. The FBI report is due Sunday.
