South Carolina's overall crime rate dropped 1.3 percent in
1984, hut violent crime ? led by a sharp increase in the
number of reported rapes ? rose 2.4 percent, the State Law
Enforcement Division reported Monday.
Incidents of rape increased 16.2 percent last year, a
dramatic reversal of an unprecedented 8 percent drop in rapes
in 1983.
"Rane was the bin surprise this year." said SLED
spokesman Hugh Munn. "The problem is we have only the
raw statistics to work with. We don't really know why
something happens, just that it docs."
Rape and aggravated assault, which rose 2.2 percent, were
the only significant increases in violent crime rates last year,
but they caused an overall upswing of 2.4 percent jn violent

knew their attackers in 59.7 percent of the rapes that were
reported.
The crime rate monitors seven offenses: murder, rape, robbery,
aggravated assault, breaking and entering, larceny and
motor vehicle theft. SLED's statewide figures arc fed to the
FBI, which compiles the national and regional trends and
percentages. The FBI report is due Sunday.
"Until we get that, we won't really know how we stack up
nationwide," Munn said. "The trends appear to be happening

The 1984 figures also show incidents of murder down 5 percent,
robbery down .5 percent, breaking and entering down
3.9 percent, larceny down I percent and motor vehicle theft up
.6 percent.

deadline was extended from the original April 10
date because many offices remained open or uncontested.
Each government heeds a president, Vice president,
secretary and treasurer. In addition, dormitory with fewer
than 250 residents must elect one RHA rcriresentaflve and
others must elect two. The RHA also needs executive %)

To be eligible, a student must be signed up to live in that
dorm next year and must have a grade-point ratio of at
least 2.0. Those interested in running for RHA executive
offices must have worked with either* a dorm government
or the RHA previously.
