Scholars' fui From Staff Reports The USC Carolina Scholars award has been boosted from $10,(X)0 to $20,000, making it one of the premiere scholarships in the nation, USC President James Holderman said. Sixty Carolina Scholars currently are enrolled at the university, with 15 additional scholars to be chosen in the near future. The application deadline for the 1985 awards is Nov. 15. "Doubling the stipend of this coveted scholarship for future Carolina Scholars will help us keep even more of South Carolina's brightest students in the state," Holderman said. "The Carolina Scholar award now carries the same value as the national Truman Scholarship and other leading academic awards." Katherine Mille, Carolina Scholars Committee chairman, said, "The size of the stipend reflects the importance the universitv places on superior academic achievement, enlightened leadership and critical thinking. "In recognizing this form of achievement with its top scholarship, the university hopes to encourage more of it throughout the state's high schools," she said. THK AVF,RA(iK SAT score of students receiving the award last year was 1420, most of whom ranked in the top 1 percent of their high school classes. The overall quality of students receiving the award this year probably will increase further, as the competition becomes more intense than ever. Millc said. "When these top-ranking students come to Carolina, they not only have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential by exploring our diverse programs, including the honors college, but they also act as catalysts, stimulating academic excellence among all students."
