The volumes, entitled American Newspaper Journalists, provide illustrated biographical and critical essays on journalists. "The publishers are planning a similar series on magazines. I have beeen talking to them about it for the past three years," Ashley said. According to Ashley, anyone interested in journalism history would recognize at least half of the names in the new reference books. "IT INCLUDES the best-known national and regional publishers in the United States. You will find some significant women journalists, and publishers of foreign language papers in addition to the widely recognized national publishers," Ashley said. Ashley, who has been in the journalism profession for 38 years, has also compiled a book of graduate term papers on the history of journalism in South Carolina. According to Ashley, the project began as only one book devoted to newspaper journalism, one for magazine journalism, one dook ior pnotograpny and one volume tor comics. "We started looking at newspapers and came up with at least 250 journalists who should be in the book. It obviously was going to be more than one volume. It ended up being four," Ashley said. "I guess I thought that I knew what I was getting into. I had no idea of this when I said I yes.
