AT&T to inst By Kathy Verkuilbn Students who live on campus may have access to a new digital communications system as early as next summer, USC President James Holderman said last Friday at a board of trustees meeting. The $6.1 million project consists of a processor and nine remote modules in various areas of the campus linked to a fiber optic network. Plans for the new system were announced last month, said Rob Roberson, systems vice president for computer affairs. "The project will make USC the first university in South Carolina and one of the first universities in the nation to install a digital communications a ?1_? _i_ ...iii 4..?n.. sysiem wnitn win aciuauy huckioic Board approves D11 lla#ltu V/nrLiiilon uy namp vdihuiidii A proposed science education center tc and high school science training for teacl of the USC board of trustees at a meet In a 14-page report, the board cited an future scientists, mathematicians and ei decline of adequately prepared science te need for the proposed center. USC spends $2.3 million per year on its communication system, and the proposed system will cost the university only $1.7 million including installation, Roberson said. "The new system would serve the community as well as the campus," Holderman said. "It would service about 75 state agencies." According to Roberson, Coastal Carolina in Conway will be the only other campus linked to the Columbia campus network. Its system will also be installed in the summer of 1985. Other USC campuses will join the network as soon as the university has funds for the project. nter for USC el and quality of instruction those eive. iter, a geology professor who specializes in ondary teacher training, will head the proColumbia campus center will cost the state lousand a year. s will be obtained from outside sources :rs planned by Carpenter. can begin operations, it must be approved ? i i:_i r?,i tn I UI1 nigllCI cuucauuil. 1 11V, uuaiu nupva ivy gram as early as 1984-85. approved a proposal for a Ph.D. degree in specializing in pathology. :ting, the board met in executive session to Holderman. is in firm hands.
