Students who live on campus may
have access to a new digital communications
system as early as next
summer, USC President James
Holderman said last Friday at a board
of trustees meeting.
The $6.1 million project consists of
a processor and nine remote modules
in various areas of the campus linked
to a fiber optic network.
Plans for the new system were announced
last month, said Rob Roberson,
systems vice president for computer
affairs.
"The project will make USC the
first university in South Carolina and
one of the first universities in the nation

work could take care of many functions
that for the school relies on
several companies to handle.
USC spends $2.3 million per year on
its communication system, and the
proposed system will cost the university
only $1.7 million including installation,
Roberson said.
"The new system would serve the
community as well as the campus,"
Holderman said. "It would service
about 75 state agencies."
According to Roberson, Coastal
Carolina in Conway will be the only
other campus linked to the Columbia
campus network. Its system will also
be installed in the summer of 1985.
Other USC campuses will join the
network as soon as the university has
funds for the project.

"I HAVE been here for 20 vears. and that is long H
enough. I think the main thing is that one should not stay 1
too long and 20 years is a good round number," Scroggins 1

"I have had a lot of time to see the school and its
students develop. The university has been very supportive
of the college over the years, but everyone has to leave
sooner or later," he said.
Scroggins, director of the 15-state Southern interscholastic
Press Association, serves as a member of the
National Advertising Review Board, the National Council
of College Publication Advisors, Journalism Education 1 I
Association Advisors Council and the Columbia Scholastic I
Press Association.
Scroggins said he had no immediate plans for the future,
but intends to remain in the Columbia area and will
possibly teach.
"THIS IS what it is all about, seeing students develop j
and do well in their personal careers," he said. I have had a >
lot of fun, seeing people come in and watching them grow. jj
"Twenty years is a long time. Hardly any deans stay that
long anymore. School s like this one will always go on and
