The win for Tennessee, 17-6, ranked seventh nationally by Tl, n AccnfiatpH Prpct w!>( itc cpvpnth virtnrv in a rn w Carolina fell to 11-7. With the Lady Gamecocks trailing by one with 12:37 to go in the first half, a 5-foot jumper by Marsi McAlister put Carolina ahead 16-15. THE GAMECOCKS then pulled away from Tennessee to attain a 38-28 lead with40seconds remaining in the half. The Lady Volunteers however, cut the lead to eight. The halftime score was USC 38, Tennessee 30. The Gamecocks needed more than eight points to ward off a comeback by the Lady Vols early in the second half. Gamecocks were trailing by nine, the largest margin of the game, with the score 48-57 in Tennessee's favor. Carolina then came back as the Lady Gamecocks pulled within two points of Tennessee three times in the last twe minutes of the game. THE LAST time, with 0:21 remaining, 6-3 center Sharor Gilmore hit a 5-foot bank shot and was fouled, making th< score 66-68 Tennessee. With many of the 878 people in attendance on their feet Gilmore missed the free throw. Tennessee got the rebound but 6-2 forward Renee Najarian produced a jump bal situation. Tennessee recovered the jump ball, and the Lady Vols wen on to make three of four free throws and win the contest. USC coach Terry Kelly said he was disappointed with th loss, but was "super proud of our players coming back th way they did." "We fought as hard as we could fight," he said. "I thin they (Tennessee) are one of the top-four teams in the country "WE STARTED forcing shots (in the second half)- We als keep having these four or five minute lulls in the second hall which usually is the difference in the game," Kelly said. Mike Lindsay of Boiling Springs High School in Spartanburg was one of the two in-state players to sign with the Gamecocks. Lindsay, a 6-5 237-pounder, was an all-region center last season.
