Educators ope By Beth Harrison Good teachers help students develop a I positive self-image, an educator opening a | national conference at IJSC said Mondav. i Betty Siegel, president of Kennesaw College in Marietta, Ga., gave the conference's < keynote address titled "Inviting Freshman < Success." < A coal miner's daughter from Cullowhee, N.C., Siegel said some people's self-concept i is made up of invitations they have not i received. "They say, 'I'm not invited to the i party, so I'll just sit at home and eat my bowl of worms," she said. "Others say, 'I was invited to the party, < but 1 did not go. People with this kind ot attitude feel they are 'not good enough or smart enough to go to the party. "Finally, there are people who say, 'There's a party. I'm invited and I'm going.' Good teachers and good administrators are those who say yes to life and can go to the party. Students should have the attitude that they are their brothers' keepers, Seigel said, but many of today's students are materialistic and lacking in civic awareness. "Students think they're going to get on the Titanic, take the only lifeboat, and everybody else will be left out." Loneliness is America's No. 1 health problem, Siegel said. "In a society that invented the backyard barbecue, social acceptance is a payoff in our country. Yet, it seems to me that students today have never been so She said loneliness and repressed hostility are common in students. Then he retreated to a corner of the cage to console himself. A student suffering from loneliness often feels like the last one in the box," Siegel said. "All students need to feel not like the one in the box, but much-invited to the party." Some students who are not made to feel in vited are females and blacks, she said. When little girls raise their hands in elementary school, the teacher calls on them more than she calls on little boys. "It gets harder to be a girl in high school," she added, noting that in high school, girls are called on in class less often than boys. And she started singing. She started singing very quietly at first and she added a word, singing 'We Shall All Overcome.' Every student, black and white, got to their feet and they began to sing together." Siegel is the only female president in the 33 units of the Georgia public higher education system.
