Track team sei in Virginia Tec By Kelti Frees "After only three meets, we really look super," said USC men's track coach, Charlie Strong. "This season looks promising." In The Virginia Tech Invitational held last weekend, the men's distance medley broke the school record with a time of 10:01.0, breaking the old record by more than two seconds. Junior Artis Johnson, junior Tony Coleman, sophomore Alan Drosky, and freshman Mike Murphy were the recordsetting members of this relay. Senior Verlon Rhodes won the 500-meter dash with a time of 1.04. "He is only one of the two seniors on the team," said Strong. "Most of the younger members look to him as a leader. "The mile reJay ran very well at the Eastmas Invitational on Jan. 20-21," said Strong. Andy Mattison, Artis Johnson, Ricky Griddine, and Verlon Rhodes brought the relay from the NCAA qualifying time. Alan Drosky won the 1,000-meter run. "We look for a good, strong race out of him, eventually," said Caoch Strong. "The only events which seem a little weak are the long jump, high jump and triple jump," said Strong, "They have the potential. I just haven't seen them put it to use yet. "We lost eight seniors last year," the coach said, "but this is definitely not a building year. We simply replaced them." #Aom Knc 1 1 fr^climon onH 1 111% yctll % 11 n V, rv nam iiao i _> iikoiiuivu uuu six sophomores. "The boys have been conditioning since September with both weights and running," said Strong. "There is no place to run indoors when it gets cold, but this hasn't been a great drawback. Everyone is working hard." The outdoor season begins March 24 at USC against Miami (of Ohio). "Our ultimate goal for the outdoor season, of course, is to qualify as many events as we can for the NCAA Nationals," said Strong, "but a more immediate goal is to peak for the Metro Championship May 10." "I'm really proud of the boys," said Strong, "and really.excited for this season." location Program J Seminar Schedule iff 1984 * 12:00-1:00 |j 4:00-5:00 JI 12:00-1:00 1 4:00-5:00 12:00-1:00 j 4:00-5:00 12:00-1:00 4:00-5:00 j 12:00-1:00 I 4:00-5:00 j 12:00-1:00 1 4 00-fv00 I luring Spring break.
