USC forward Jimmy Foster scored 16 points in the first half and finished the game with 18 points to lead the Gamecocks. Junior center Mike Brittain and freshman guard Michael Foster finished close behind Jimmy Foster with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Despite trailing throughout the first half, the Rivermen stayed close to USC for most of the half, as they stayed within seven points up until the six-minute mark. THE GAMECOCKS pulled away with 1:54 left in the half, when freshman guard Matt Mayes assisted Jimmy Foster to begin the string of unanswered points. Jimmy Foster tapped in a miss by Brad Jergenson at the buzzer to give the Gamecocks a 44-28 lead at the half. The late barrage in the half helped USC to shoot 60 percent for the half. Missouri-St. Louis shot just under 44 percent. In the game, USC shot just over 60 percent while the Rivermen shot 46 percent. USC head basketball coach Bill Foster said his team "couldn't get a good flow going on offense." "They (Missouri-St. Louis) ran a control offense, and they didn't turn the ball over much," Foster said. "They only had five turnovers in the first half, and four of those came late in the first half." "I THINK we got a good break toward the end of the first half when we went up by 16 points." In the second half the Gamecocks led by as much as 25 points while Foster experimented with different lineups. Nine USC players played more than 14 minutes and no player stayed in longer than 27 minutes. "We're still trying to cement who is going to come in at the three, four and five spots," Foster said. "I'm a little cnnrerneH that wp didn't get the production from some players like we should have." COACH FOSTER said Michael Foster and Mayes both played well.
