'Seven and the Ragged 1 Duran Duran's By Doug Keith si Duran Duran isn't just another pretty pop \y music face, and the group proves it on its g< new release, "Seven and the Ragged Tiger." After its second album, "Rio," took hold tl on America's music charts, Duran Duran " became the sweethearts of the nation's teen set. After all, here were five handsome young men, dancing across exotic lands in videos set t to the band's popular songs. On "Seven and the Ragged Tiger," 1\ however, Duran Duran demonstrates that above all, its members are mature, talented musicians ? and they aren't writing songs f just to please screaming 13-year-old girls. e THE NINE tracks on this latest release deal with anxiety, doubt and risk in cryptic t terms that most 13-year-olds could not s understand. THRU DEC provides assort sideration from critics and the public alike. "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" represents an assortment of themes in coin music ana lyrics. Most of the tunes are lively and danceable, with bass guitarist John Taylor and drummer Roger Taylor (no relation) providing a consistently strong backbeat. "Union of the Snake," the first single released from the album, is a prime example of the "danceability" of Duran Oman's music. ALONG WITH the album's dance tunes, there are couple of mellow, reflective songs equally well written and produced. "New Moon on Monday," a song reminiscent of "Save a Prayer" from "Rio," displays the talent and dexterity ot Keyooardist Nick Rhodes, as well as the emotional range of LeBon's vocals. 777J Wfi 1 m n WITt APPRC bags S2 $1 * Includes ( j ^does not ii >ER KING , rooi rCHED!! \LAD PLATTERS' 111114? .ICE OF ONE HI!! Like "Union of the Snake," this tune features the saxophone work (if Andy Hamilton, who turned in a distinctly popular solo on the title cut from "Rio." Ian L.ittle, who co-produced "Rio" and the band's debut album, returns on this release and has produced top-notch recordings for each of the album's nine tracks. LITTLE KEEPS each song well-balanced, allowing 110 single instrument or voice to dominate. He does an especially good job in blending LeBon's lead singing with the other instruments and vocal tracks. Although "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" is oriented less toward pop music than its predecessor, "Rio," the album should be recognized as Duran Duran's best record yet. 4249 I KE UP ffriD SEE...
